larger decks

Jeff that all depends,

Where do you live,
are you only cleaning it,
what sealer are you using,
how long have you been doing decks,
how long will it take you

If it's truly that large I would discount it some but there are truly too many variables for someone on a computer to give you an idea.

I do discount larger decks, but I do so somewhat on the fly........I dont really have a formula for it.

As you know, there are many factors to consider:

If there is a really large area of floor that I know I can spray quickly, I know I have more room to lower the price.

It's not an exact science, and you won't get every job. There will always be someone lower. If you present yourself properly, you can prevail. I once got a job for $1425 when the next lowest bid was $875.

The reason I asked was I gave a quote on a redwood deck over 2500 square feet. I was going to clean, neutralize, and stain the deck with 2 coats of penofin( customer supplied). I even was going to wait the 3 hours in between the 2 coats as required by penofin. After giving the customer my quote he basically threw me out saying I was way too high. He state's that all other quotes were under 1,000 dollars. I think that's too low

Let him have it. Damn Low ballers strike again. I would have went no lower than $.90 per square and that is with the customer supplying the stain. Under a $1000 would put you at $.35 - $.40 a square. I would not touch it. Dont feel bad about losing this one. He will pay when the job is finished and he (customer not happy) with it.

Jeff,

Don't lose any sleep over that one..........save your energy for the next one.

Hey Jeff,

I would not sweat that one. I'm going to stick to my price this year. Everytime I try to cut someone a break, the job ends up not going so smooth. I keep saying to myself, "I can't belive I'm not getting what I wanted for the job and now this"

I wouldn't sweat that one either. You are in business to MAKE money not loose it. Ridiculous price by the other guy in my opinion.

Reeed

If everyone stuck to thier prices as mentioned above, we would all be making a good livin.

One hit me yesterday (Sunday) I estimated a Residential Exterior Cleaning on Saturday and gave my price. Today the customer called to set up the job. He also told me, my competitor (closest) came out on Sunday, he even went to the extream of demostation for the customer. To top it off he was cheaper. Customer would not give me that info but said he was cheaper.

Needless to say, this customer wants to know everything under the sun about chems, equipment, knowledge, insurance etc.... What he claims sold him on us was our equipment when we pulled up, our quick response time, our knowledge on the visit even to the point of artillery fungus, and last but not least he liked our website.

Present yourself/company as a professional and stick to your guns. There are those that will see through all the bullsh**. As this one has and spend some time with your potential customers. This is what they are looking for. Know your environment and you will succeed. But as mentioned, you did not lose on the above job. Dont sweat it.....

Only Fences

Screw him, the cheapest I will do exterior wood is on fences, and Im still at $1.10 for that, I dont discount too much no matter how big the deck, maybe if the bid comes in at $3000-$4000 I might shave 5-8 % tops, there is too muc work out there and not enough contractors to do it all, Why discount..?
