Gentlemen and ladies, Mikey who did his first hood job ( by his own admission on this board ) on May 23rd is now offering to teach anyone how to clean hoods, albeit at no cost! I admit I'm a little naive about my experience, having only started in '97 and I will admit that I have attended Phil Acklands' Seminars, gotten certified and cleaned a fair few hoods, but I don't feel I have acheived the Phi Beta Kappa on how to clean hoods. Everyday I find out something new about this business. I think you've got a lot of chutzpah, Mikey. The rest of us, need to pull on our boots and salute you. You might also want to check with your insurance carrier re: training newcomers. You might be liable, in a lawsuit sense, if one of your trainees in another state is negligent and causes a mishap. There are probably clauses that you should look at having your students sign waiving your responsibility. Good luck and good cleaning!

Mikey, while it's good you have gotten the confidence it takes to make that offer, perhaps you should wait just a little bit longer, personally I wouldn't be in business now if I still did things the way we did it the first year or so. Maybe that was because I wasn't the brightest bulb in the lamp, but who was at 20.

I think it is great how people within our industry offer for free how to clean, just for the pleasure of teaching. There is a lot of things to know and understand in the Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Industry.

Mikey, Thanks for your offer. I think its great that you would train me and I would love to take a trip to Wyoming. However, a flight from Myrtle Beach to wyoming is quite pricey...any east coasters out there willing to pitch in...I am a WVU grad and and Pittsburgh native.. I saw some potential Mountaineers in the thread...no problems with law suits thats not my bag. I am just interested in seeing if I want to get in this business before I make any more financial commitments.

Most of my work is in the Dc area, which by my estimate is about 400 miles from you, I would be willing to help if possible.
What is it you want? Do you just want to see if you want to get into the business or training?

As far as exhaust cleaning goes, I have a somewhat new guy (less than a year) and a 9-year veteran that would both not mind showing the beginning ropes for exhaust cleaning. Just prepare to get dirty!
Most of our restaurants are in Norfolk and Virginia Beach
Although exhaust cleaning is a small portion of our business, there are many other things to learn as well.

As any honest person in this business will tell you, there is always somethingto learn, no matter how long you do this. New products, procedures and equpiment etc.
