Need your "Dirty" pictures

Phil Ackland

KEC Expert
We are closing in on the new Phil Ackland's Commercial Kitchen Fire Manual.

For those of you familar with the previous manuals, this one will be a compilation of both the Inspectors and the Fire Investigators manuals.

We are now looking for interesting photos of noncompliant components of the exhaust system or fire suppression.

In the past Matt Bryant and Chris Gibbon have won the free manual that we offer for best photo. And they have been named in the book for their contribution. Can't the rest of you do better?

You need to get on it. Will be sending out the final draft on the 30th of Nov. at the latest.

Phil,

How many pictures would you like? And what kind? (i.e. Leaky duct, Missing Hinge Kits, Horizontal Nightmares, etc.)

Anything unusual. Gross out grease, neat photographic angles with light, steam, water spray (that sort of thing). If you feel the photo "tells a story" send it along. If you want to imprint company name on it that is fine, but we do prefer it doesn't have a date stamp (as they stale). Nor should it identify a particular client (BK or such).

Here's one we're negotiating a rehab price on. This might be my first photo post on this forum...wow!
The nozzles were so greased over, the pressure from the ansul system wouldn't have been able to break the seal! The links never would have broken they were so encased, and had they managed to break, the cables weren't going anywhere!

Keep them coming

I always get a laugh when I see inaccessible access panels, but I like to think they were accessible when they were installed. My favorite is a hinge kit installed on the opposite side of a short electrical conduit. The conduit stops the fan from tipping more than an inch or so! I'll post a picture when my foreman forwards me one. I just couldn't imagine being a contractor, installing one, and not tipping the fan to see that it works....makes me wonder if they actually know what it is they just installed or if it just came with the system...

Here's a picture of the hinge kit. The photo isn't very revealing, but the electrical conduit is not long enough to actually tilt the fan. Not only is the hinge kit useless, it actually inhibits access to the duct and fan blades! Brilliant!

That is kind of like someone installing a house door with the door knob and deadbolt on the same side of the door as the hinges. Wow.

If the fan was installed w/in the last 5 years here in my town, it has a 50% chance of being installed wrong! I've been having my new customers call the contractor back in to fix their mistake! I've actually had one contractor call me to apologize. He is now preemptively fix his one! I'm not sure if I should refer him for being on top of things, or still shun him for the amazing stupidity in the first place...

Needn't view your pics to know and understand your frustration..I come across this situation often.

Thought someone had mentioned Phil sold the biz and all rights and is no longer any part of this?

If this is so, who is posting at this time if it isn't him?
