painted concrete homes

can anyone give their opinions as to what is the best chemical to use when washing a painted concrete home, also what tip is advisable to use so as not to bore holes in it or remove the paint

Use a 40° tip, perhaps a larger sized tip so it provides reduced pressure.

Choice of chemicals depends on what it is dirty with, and what the intentions are. If it is for paint prep, you could add some TSP to your mixture. If it is just cosmetic cleaning, I would probably use the same mixture I'd use on anything else, such as alum or vinyl.

Its my understanding that the tsp is a bit harsher on the surface, so you would only use it if you planned to refinish.

Anyone else care to chime in here?

I'll offer what I have learned from the boards and from talking to some local painters...

TSP is a bit harsher and is an excellent cleaning chemical however, the reason not to use it on paint (if not prepping for new paint job) is that beyond cleaning the paint, it will actually etch the finish. This is why it is best for paint prep. By cleaning and etching it roughs the surface of the old paint and makes a better base layer for the new paint to be applied to.
Beyond etching, some claim they can actually see a dullness to the appearance to the paint when finished using TSP.
I know some guys still use it in their usual wash mix because of its cleaning capabilities but I believe they use it more diluted. I don't know enough about it to say whether this should be considered acceptable. I tend to only use it on decks and paint prep jobs.

p.s. like I said, this is just information taken from others and I can't vouch for the accuracy so I'm curious to see what others say
