Question for firemen

We just had a fire down the street. Empty house, didn't burn all the way down, ten fire trucks (different types). I guess it was burning pretty good before I noticed it and took a look.

But the question is, what is with all the weird people with still cameras? The news was there, I understand that. I could understand maybe 3 or 4 freelance photographers. But there were at least 20 running around with big lens cameras. Most of the time they were just standing there looking. It was like some kind of science fiction movie.

Does this happen everywhere?

I was only at a fire once. Townhouse behind us caught fire starting in the garage. Some lady was screaming bloody murder about how we "have to the her out!"

Chris was only about 16. He and I ran inside and searched the house thoroughly but found nothing. The only place we didn't search was the bathroom. Meanwhile the fire moving from the garage to the kitchen was LOUD as HECK! And the heat was almost unbearable. That day will stick in my mind forever.

We got back outside, despondent because we couldn't find whoever this lady was screaming about. The fire trucks showed up about 3 minutes later but the place burned almost to the ground. We found out she was screaming about her dog which they found later in the bathtub still alive.

Anyway, what's with all the weird camera people?

We get that all the time. Everybody is a "photographer" whenever we have a fire. We have one kid that follows us on his bicycle with his camera around his neck. I really hate it when the "photographers" make it to the wreck scene & shoot pics of victims when they are half naked & bloody. I've been doing this 23 years and have called the cops on em more than once.

I've worked on fire scenes doing cleanup and there are usually a bunch of insurance adjusters taking pictures. One commercial building fire had multiple tenants with all different insurance companies and they were all allowed in at once to do their photography. There must have been 20 of them trying to prove that it was somebody else's fault.
