Rig setups

Hello everyone, I am curious to know what everyone thinks of trailer rigs vs. truck or van mounted rigs. I have both, but am looking at investing for another rig, to prepare for the busy season comming up. The cube van rig I have is used on the hood vents and exhaust jobs, and the trailer is being used by my locomotive crew, I am looking at setting one up for decks, and surface jobs. Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions.l

Its a tough call. If employees are driving, I'd prefer a truck mounted rig. I haven't put a scratch on my trailer in the four years I have had it..........I'm not so sure I'd end up with the same result after four WEEKS of an employee driving it.

Trailers are great because if your tow vehicle breaks down, you can rent a u-haul pickup and tow it around. If you box truck breaks, you're out of luck until it can get fixed.

If you can fit everything you need on a truck to do surface jobs and decks I say go with a truck. I assume you mean flat work when you say surface jobs. Since you have other rigs one breaking down may not hurt you but Mike does have a point.

If you went and bought a cab and chassis with the extra long wheel base (made for a 10ft bed) you could probably get everything on it. I think they even make a chassis cab that you can put a 12 footer on.

I have to admit I like the versitility of the truck/trailer setup. I like to able to drop the equipment I don't need. The other day I washed some school buses and didn't need all of the equipment on the trailer so I put the ol machine in the back of the truck with a sup. hose and a wand/wash hose and a 5gal. bucket to mix soap into down stream. I decided to do that after I saw (I think it was Clean County) do it in some pictures he posted. Plus I got the flip hitch in the back to pull a goose neck. And I can use the truck to go pick up chems and whatever.

I don't know how long it would last with emplyees pulling it but I've never really had to jam my trailer in a tight spot. I just pick the most convenient and strech the hose out there. I have a friend in the lawn business, he has 29 employees and he says they have only trashed one in the past 8 years.

Thats a difference between residential and commercial. Some of the driveways I've had to back into are tighter then you could imagine. And some of the backroads that are just wide enough for a car to pass......

Rob,

I was in your shoes not too long ago. I had a Ford diesel Box Van and 2 trailers and a 1 ton van. They all are good.

For what you are talking about, I would look into a van. Just a simple van that can manuver around.

The need for all three units will be there at some point. I liked them all.
