Rising gas prices

The hot topic of discussion this morning at the fuel island where I fill up was that gas is predicted to hit $5 a gallon by summer 2012. I called out the driver that was talking this non sense when he produced a computer print off from fox news and sure enough the former president of Shell stated he saw $5 gas in the future.

Given the political unrest in the middle east, the unwillingness of the government to drill on our own soil, and the fact that this is an election year I would have to say in my opinion it will probably happen.

I have been told by atleast three customers that should the price of diesel get above $4.25 (currently $3.82) they will suspend washing. For all of you guys out there that have been through previous election years or high fuel costs how did they affect your business?

I plan to stay the course keep doing what I'm doing, stay opptomistic, keep the bills paid and keep looking foward to another great day!

Not to long ago we paid $5 a gal for diesel, so I am sure it's coming around again. Most people will try to get a fuel surcharge fee when prices spike that high, but you risk losing accounts.

This is probably not what you are looking for, but I would say just forget about it and keep working hard. You can not do anything about rising fuel prices. Dwelling on it won't change anything. When prices rise I just increase 5% or so on my bids but don't tell my customers. But last time gas prices spiked I used high gas prices as a way to get higher prices.

My opinion is that you should just work twice as hard and pretend the gas prices are the same and not think about it too much. Add some extra money to your quotes but don't let it bring you down or alter your business. If you dwell on the negative you will start losing customers and business. Stay positive, prices go up and down and there is nothing you can do.

Let these other companies dwell on it and then take their contracts!! This might be a great opportunity to buy out companies. There is always a positive way to view things.

I like that perspective..

I agree 100% I have worked too hard to bow out or submit to a gas pump or a Washington burecrat getting his pocket greased by the oil companies .

Just throwing it out there to see if any of the veterans had advice on how to get through lean times because lets face it, even if fuel prices go up the market will not follow suite atleast in commercial work it won't in my opinion. I sell quality and gain contracts even though I am higher then anyone else, but I have found out that if I even talk about raising prices then the managers are on the phone immediately shopping around because there is always someone willing to cut your throat! I had a TM tell me "Quality is great, but staying within budget is more critical"
