Sales Tax in Florida

Cant believe this is happening to me, Start business 5 years ago, met with the usual people, lawyer accountant ect. Asked accountant if I had to pay sales tax, he stated that it would be easier if I paid the tax on items I was going to resale and not charge the customer sales tax. That way I would not have to file quaterly sales tax. Said service that I did was not taxable. End of story, so I thought, got a call from a state auditor that had audited on of my accounts, She "black female, me white redneck" not a good combo, she noticed that I had not charged sales tax and informed me that I needed to pay sales tax on all sales/service for the last 5 years. In florida thats 7%, that hurts, She also said that if I was unable to pay in 90 days that state would be filling a lean on me, I was in such a hurry to grab my bottle of wiskey that I forgot to ask, was the lean on my business or my new house. Have brand new landa skid unit 4gpm 4000 psi zero hours that will be going on e-bay to help pay taxes. Will post picture of machine when I sober up and take pictures. Working white man aint got a chance anymore!

I would call the pro's that gave you the advice five years ago. As a rule service is not taxable-good luck.

I Have Been Washing In Tallahassee, Fl. For Twelve Years And I Have Never Charged Sales Tax To My Customers Because This "service" Is Not Taxable. You Will Be Fine, But I Will Have A Beer For You Anyway.

This is the exact thing that just happened to my struggling new business!!!! Puerto Rico just implemented sales tax 7% on ALL business, goods and services!!! This has put me out of business before I am in business!!! I have a a lightly used Mi-T-M machine I will be selling as well. It's too much, I cannot afford good help because along with the taxes that obligates me to pay my help by the books and withhold taxes from their pay....plus Workers Comp is 40 fricking percent and has to be applied for for every project!!!!! I will have to hire a full time person to stand in line at WC office....ppeople will not pay the true value for hood cleaning as it is...I give up.

Russ you hiring? Ant you want that I come out there and help you get yer flatwork business going? ( Yeah I kept my skirt and what of it?)

I know what your going through Robin Hood..so much for trying to run a legitimate business and play by the rules.....before long I'll be working for some illegal alien who will pay me dirt wages!!!!!

Greg,

Contact your accountant and have them call the tax people. It's never a good idea for business owners to talk personally to the man. Accountants and tax people have their own lingo - which we are not meant to understand. You are probably in the clear for cleaning hoods. Washing houses, decks, trucks, vehicles, etc are mostly taxable, so you only have to charge the customer and pay that 7% to the state. Hood cleaning comes under a different category in most states and doesn't get taxed. The Talahassee lassie probably dosen't understand the difference, your accountant should.

Jason, that sucks. I hate to hear that, Dude, really.
I hate to see your enthusiasm and drive get ground down by bureaucracy and lowballers.

:(

Sales Tax

Thanks for all the advice, Recieved a letter from the state on what services are taxable 12a-1.0091 nonresidential cleaning service are subject to tax. Examples of nonresidential cleaning services subject to tax are, chimney cleaning "I do BBQ joints" service station cleaning and degreasing services. Called several hood cleaning competitors in my area, We share some of the same bad habits and gather together regularly to see who can consume the most and act the stupidiest, they all stated that they charge sales tax. Funny how we party together and never have brought this up. Perhaps if we werent so busy rehydrating after work it would have come up. Anyway it looks like I do owe the tax but will not just roll over, will go down fighting. Dishonest people have more money, work less, and have more toys!!!

Are you selling them the cleaner or putting how many gallons used on your invoice? What are they charging sales tax on? I would ask to TT a supervisor.
Keep us informed.

Invoice reads

Clean
1 fan
8 filters
1

This is how I do all my invoices

Jason

Ran into the same problem, workers comp from 1 company was 70% of their pay, that was for a guy to get on the roof. That plus a helper and all other expenses just didnt seem like it was worth all the hassell. Thought I was going to be out of business before I started, funny how the schools that certify dont tell you about all the pitfalls. I took a different rout, I had no other choice, house was one the line, old lady on my back. Did this, hope the info may help, new I had to, 1) stay small, big aint always better, 2) bid jobs I could do by myself " sure there are a lot of dangers that go along with the solo thing, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do" 3) bid them high, I dont sell my business as a discout cleaner, you want cheap, call the other guy. Sure you not going to close all you sales I do about 50/50 4) dont fool youself, if it aint been cleaned on a regular basis it aint gonna be, its a 1 time cleaning, bid real, really high, no matter how high you bid the customer is still saving money expecially if its been years since its been cleaned. 5) use temp help for the big jobs you cant do youself, dont get a roof man, comp is to much, just a helper 6) dont quit your full time job, I clean about 4 restaurants a week average 350.00 per cleaning thats 1400 per week thats about 72k in sales per year. Helps pay bills and support bad habits, It takes a while to get good customers, I have dropped and added regularly, now I have good paying customers, that are good people to work for. Sure working 2 jobs sucks 7 days week 60-70 hours but bad habits are hard to break. Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice Greg. I am so sick of fly by nighters and drug dealers gettign away with so much. Shoot maybe I should run for office then I could steal public money, have women to do sexual favors for me, and smoke a doobie without going to the slammer.

Oh yeah the man's got me down right now but I'll work my way through it...eventually.

It sucks fr everyone I know, even the poor little guy selling hot dogs is gtting the shaft....I feel a relocation for the Grogan family coming on....hey maybe Faciltec is hiring somewhere....hello Big Joe are you out there?

Anybody got Rusty's number..I'm sure Rog could use a helper.....

Hood Cleaning Company 4 sale

Jason,

If your thinking about moving to Jacksonville, Fla. "Crime capital of the state, has more murders than Maimi, Tampa, Orlando combined" I know someone who has a hood cleaning business for sale, really cheap. They just have to clear up a tax issue real quick. Why was it when I started my business and got certified,: no one told me that unless I had staff working for me my business was worthless?

Golly Greg with a city introduction like that....I'm on my way!!!!! I did the whole Florida thing a few years back...I'd got back to work for an engineering firm if I headed back there.....Florida is over rated in my opinion...I tell ya it's a good thing I learned spanish i would have not survived if I didn't speak the language of the majorty in south Florida.....Hell who knows what I am going to do...I will be checking on a couple other Islands to see if there is a market for hood cleaning.....one that does not charge tax on services!!!

I've got a job offer to run drilling crews on the west coast and another one to help run a tungsten mine in New Mexico.....I went into PW/KEC to take it easy for a while..plan was going alright until the government pulled this sales tax thing out of their ass!!!

For the rest of the US and especially Florida be warned Puerto Ricans are relocating to the mainland in droves!!!!!

Anybody got Rusty's number..I'm sure Rog could use a helper.....

Roger and rusty are one man crews...no helpers allowed!

Jason, hang in there and don't throw in the towel!

You can overcome these issues with some perseverence.

South Florida

Went to Miami about 10 years ago on a business trip, stopped into Mc Donalds to get some breakfast. Tried to order and not a single person spoke english there. Long story short, I was not able to get anything for breakfast because no one understood english. Even the "uno combo poor fa vor" didnt work, by the way thats a number one combo please, and that was 10 years ago. Of course I am sure a southern white boy redneck trying to speak spainish accent didnt help. If you got blue eyes and blonde hair you stick out like a sore thumb, but hay, them tellamunda chicks with the nice round booties and the brown skin sure are pleasing to the eyes!!
