Are there any special precautions you need to take on cleaning a slate roof? I have a very large one to clean.

Slate can be very fragile, so be careful. Also, some Slate can discolor when soaps mixed with chlorine are used on them.

When using SH slate will leach iron from the oar in the natural stone. Prepare the customer for this. It is totally natural.

Sam in Tampa had Oxione for cleaning. I might try the oxygen bleach instead of SH.

remember no iron may leach at all. It depends on where the slate came from regionally. We did allot of slate over the years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! call me when you are getting ready to clean it.

You can apply an acid as a two step process to stop the affect on the iron in the stone.

Regular roof mix. Don't walk on it. Let the rain rinse. Collect check. On to the next job!

Most of those slate roof up north have a pretty steep pitch so like the otheres said, try to stay off them and shoot it from a ladder if you can. The roof mix will make it slicker than ice and it's common to break a few if your not careful when walking on them.

Not yet. The homeowner is thinking about replacing it instead. He does not like ths slate. It is an 11,000 sq' house. I'm calling him today.
