Swimming Pools

Has anyone else out there had a customer ask if you can remove the black stains from the walls and bottom of a swimming pool?

If so has anyone attempted to clean it themselves, any luck? Is acid the way to go, and how do you go about estimating the price/cost?

I would not even normally even reallly consider tackeling this job but it is a good customer of mine, and he is the owner of a Real-Estate company many prospects await! Any suggestions or reccomendations are greatly Appreciated!

Hi Andrew,

Dont pass this job up. Its very easy and the money is good.

The pool needs to be acid washed. Depending on how bad the staining is you can either apply through downstreaming or through a sure-flow or pump sprayer.

If downstreaming, try applying the acid (muratic) without diluting. meaning, let the injector dilute it. If you are not getting almost instant results, try diluting the acid 4-1 with water and applying through hand sprayer. Some staining, usually hard water or calcium buildup requires undiluted acid to be applied. Remember, you should get almost instant results. Tip, add a little Joy dish soap, (couple squirts) to the acid to help keep it on the wall of the pool.

You really don't need a pressure washer for this type of job. All you are doing is applying the acid and rinsing. You could do it with a garden hose. Do small sections (10' x 10') at a time.

Start at the deepest end and work you way out. Wear a respirator rated for acid because the fumes will be bad. Estimate by sq. ft. of surface area at .08 to .15 a sq. ft. depending on how bad the stains are. you should have no problem making $100 an hour on this job.
