A fire at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery

Fire closes Coppola Winery restaurant for the night
A fire at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville forced the evacuation of the winery's restaurant Wednesday.

The fire, which was called in just before 7 p.m., ignited in a chimney above the restaurant's kitchen, said Geyserville Fire Capt. Mack Montanye.

The cause was unclear but it likely resulted from a combination of heat from the fireplace, which runs on a mixture of wood and natural gas, and particulate build up in the chimney, he said.

About 75 people were evacuated from the restaurant, Rustic, which is below a hall that holds exhibits of props and memorabilia from Coppolla's films.

The sprinkler system extinguished most of the fire within minutes, Montanye said.

There were no injuries.

“They had to close it down the rest of the night, but it will be open tomorrow I believe,” Montanye said.
