Dictionary.com defines a gentleman's agreement as:
1. an agreement that, although unenforceable at law, is binding as a matter of personal honor.
Although I would like to believe that people are good to their word, very few are. I believe that a man is only as good as his word. Recently, I ran into one of my competitors on the job. We talked for a while until we both had to get back to work. We are direct competitors in the fact that one of our target markets is the same restaruant. He has more of the Georgia market but I am closing in the gap (he has been working with them for 9 years and I have been marketing to them for 6.5 months now). We had a gentleman's agreement not to directly go after the others current base. Well I got a call from one of the locations this past week and he informed me that they are going to a new company... the guy that I was talking about earlier.
That is the point of a contract, I get it, however this proves that 99% of people are full of crap and peoples words mean as much.
