Cause Of Local Restaurant Fire Determined

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- Marlborough Police and Fire departments determined the cause of the June 26 fire inside the Central West Grill that destroyed two businesses and displaced 17 residents of the apartments above the restaurant.

The fire on 171 Main St. was caused by grease that caught on fire inside the commercial cooking ductwork.

As of January, a new regulation was passed to prevent this type of event. The code states owners of such businesses must hire someone who possesses a Certificate of Competency to clean and inspect commercial cooking appliances, which is issued by the state fire marshall.

This regulation, 527 CMR 11, was created after two firefighters died in an August 2007 fire at the Tai Ho restaurant in West Roxbury.

The owner of the restaurant is being charged with the violation of the State Fire Code regulation 527 CMR 11, which can be found on the Department of Fire Services website.
