Sturgis, Michigan

Sturgis, Mich. — Sturgis firefighters were dispatched to a report of a fire in a fryer vat at 6:19 a.m. today at McDonald's on Centerville Road in Sturgis.

When first-arriving crews approached the building, flames were visible above the roof. Later is was discovered these flames were from a fryer vent and not the roof itself.

Firefighters entered the smoke-filled building to find the fryer still on fire. The extinguishing system that is built into the fryer extinguished the majority of the fire, but there were hidden spaces behind panels the system could not reach. These spaces, as well as the roof vent, were extinguished by Sturgis firefighters.

The restaurant is a corporate-owned store and will be temporarily closed.

The Sturgis Fire Department responded with 16 firefighters and was assisted at the scene by LifeCare Ambulance.

No damage estimates are available at this time and no injuries were reported. Sturgis firefighters cleared the scene at 7:35 a.m.
