What can a homeowner do to prolong the life of thier deck???

OK, most folks don't want to pay for someone to stain their deck every other year, so lets talk about what a homeowner can do to extend the life of their finish on the deck. Here's a short list of ideas to help make your stain last an extra year or so:
1) Keep it clean. this means take the hose and rinse it off occasionally. Also, blow off those leaves when they fall.
2) If you have potted plants on the deck, move them around just a little, so the pots don't cover the same spot all year.
3) Don't apply tanning oil, or bug spray while on the deck. Both of these items will affect the stain if it gets on it.
4) If you have a grill on the deck, buy a piece of clear plastic at your local home improvement store (2' x 4') to put underneath. This will keep any spilled grease off the deck.
5) If you live where it snows and you need to shovel, use a shovel made from plastic not metal.

Just some basic maintenance as described above, will add life to your deck finish, and save you money!!!
