WHITBY -- A fire broke out at the KFC restaurant in downtown Whitby late Wednesday afternoon after the building's exhaust system overheated.

Whitby firefighters responded to the small blaze at 301 Dundas St. W. at about 4:15 p.m. on June 2.

Overheating of the exhaust system ignited surrounding insulation in the ceiling, according to Whitby fire and emergency services.

Everyone inside the building was evacuated safely and no injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $35,000.

"To decrease the chance of fire occurring in kitchen exhaust systems, hoods, ducts and roof fans need to be cleaned regularly by a kitchen exhaust cleaning company to minimize grease build up," said Chief Fire Prevention Officer Dave Speed.

"The frequency of cleaning will depend on the volume of cooking. For some restaurants it may require cleaning as often as every month. Fixed suppression systems need to be serviced semi-annually."
