Best and Worst of 2010

What forms of marketing were you best and worst performers this year?

For us the best was cold calling with minor success in direct mailers.Even these didn't produce like they have in years past.

By far our worst was the rock in a bag.I know others have had great success with it,but after 4000 of them with follow up letters we saw zero ROI.I think our second place went to a 12k flyer campaign(targeting high end houses 3 times over 3 months) that resulted in only a handful of calls and 1 paying job.

Cold Calling and Direct Mailing.

Have been thinking about the "rock in a bag thing" but to me it's like littering. I have seen other's, like landscapers, do that and I have actually seen customers pick them up and throw them directly in the trash with out even looking at them, shaking their head in disgust in the process.

Rock in the bag, I hate when idiots throw this crap on my property. I never do what I myself dont like done to me. I walk my dog thru the nehiborhood and see this crap all over the place. Alot of rolled up flyers with a rubberband around it, rock in a bag. Then when the landscapper's come thru it becomes "garbage on the lawn" as they run all this crap over and spew it all over the place !!

Spend the money and advertise in a local newsletter that directly gets mailed to the communities your targeting. STAY IN IT and you will become a hosehold name, you will also get the attention of the HOA's as well from this type of publication.

2010 seemed to be Internet followed by repeat customers followed by PM Companies and finally networking with local companies. Not all necessarily in that order as I didn't figure the numbers for each but all in all it was a pretty good year for us.

Be$t of Luck to EVERYONE in 2011...

:poke:LOW BALL HACKS, I just today got back over $22K+ of work I lost last year with one PM company, They went with a couple other contractors and as the manager said "They were sick of the hassles and just wanted us back" We got them back and at a higher rate than I bid last year. Yessssssssss!!! just finished signing contracts in their office

Although hacks aggravate the heck out of me, sure is good advertisement for me. Go with a hack or hire hassle free JL Pressure Washing

Other good advert, everything I am doing is adding up

I totally agree with the Internet but am suprised with the RSVP mailer. I have heard many folks have had great ROI with this. I have not tried it but was thinking about it.

Did it ever work for you Michael?

Didn't even pay for the mailing. It sucked and was lied to about the demographic. I was told top 25,000 incomes/home values etc in LEXINGTON. All the calls I got were from surrounding counties.

2011 is looking to be our best year yet. We only market for commercial.

1. Cold calling (walking in the front door every month or so)
2. referals
3. email marketing
4. fax marketing

added another 180k for 2011.

Best - Internet

Worst - Digital Ad (where you get displayed on 50 or so TVS around town in restaurants, car washes etc)

Best Cold Calling, Yellow Pages
Worst Door Knockers
