Since Thursday I have struck out hard on 3 jobs.Losing money on all 3 due to unforeseen conditions.
Thursday's job should have been simple 1 concrete drive way and parking pad at buildings right next door to each other.I figured no more than an hour for both. What a nightmare they both turned into because the 50yrs old concrete didn't look new blah, blah, blah.Explaining to them it won't ever look new took an extra 20 minutes on top of the 2 extra hours I spent trying to make this crappy concrete look the best I could.
Today's job was supposed to be a simple dryvit building wash(front of building only) and side walk cleaning.First the building wouldn't come clean, the algae and mold have eaten into the dryvit to the point chems and light pressure won't take any of the stuff off. Then a GFI receptacle in the front wall catches fire while I am rinsing.I duct taped the recepts, but failed to notice the gap between the wall and weather proof cover that allowed water to get in behind the cover directly on the wiring.
I break out he fire extinguisher put out the flames because the GFI doesn't trip the breaker until much later.Call the customer and ask them to please come kill the power only to find out they have left the state.Wait for their daughter to show up to cut power and make sure nothing inside was burning.Thank goodness she was super cool about everything. She kept telling me the recept wasn't my fault and don't worry about it.That I shouldn't discount the job because we have time involved etc.
I explain to her the building won't come clean and repainting is the best thing to consider at this point.Discount the job a $100 for not getting the dryvit clean and replacement of the recept.
Then on to the home of the same customer for a walkway and patio cleaning.Again some nasty old concrete that looked 100% better but still looked bad after cleaned followed up by a patio loaded with planters tables, chairs and a huge grill. They promised they would move it all,but somehow forget in their effort to get out of town for the weekend.
I hate days like this anyway, but a couple in the same week really make me miserable.Even worse is hemorrhaging cash on jobs that should be easy.I have forgotten I'm only human and there are some things that just can't be cleaned no matter how hard I try.

Thanks for the story ...everyone I talk to...... have days like this ......including me........ Its great when a veteran puts it out there.........It helps the rest of us.

edit: sorry that it happend

Given this weather disaster we've had since December, the future is debateable :(

Been there done that and I feel your pain Scott and everyone else's who goes though it. Here is a receptacle that I fried on a job. To top it off I also killed 2 KOI fish and 3 big Gold fish on the same job. Between the customer and the Insurance Company this one simple easy job turned into a 2 week nightmare. Ask me about a set of $20,000 doors on another job about a month later....:drag:

Damm Rookies !!!

Wow Larry that one burnt pretty bad.Thankfully there was not burning on the exterior and I think once the GFI finally tripped it stopped things from going any farther. In 8yrs we have never had a receptacle do this.Beside the potential for fire on the rig this is one of the other of many reasons we keep a fire extinguisher on the rig away from the machine.
I know we all have days like this, but this one had me ready to quit for some reason.

I'll offer to replace the recept Monday and they will be happy the job was discounted.Their daughter was so laid back about everything and told me her parents aren't the kind to sweat the small stuff.I would rather lose money instead of damaging their dryvit and replacing the recept than have my reputation slaughtered.
I guess because they year is starting off so slow and landing new accounts has been so hard the last year I'm just frustrated.

Sorry to hear about what you are going through Scott.

I have had a lot of similar things happen.

This week I was supposed to wash trucks most of the week along with Friday nite, all day today and all day tomorrow but the wash pad drain system is clogged and they have been working on it since Monday, hopefully it will be fixed soon so I can go wash more trucks.

Hope things get better soon.

we all have back days

What, no pics of that one? :grinning-moose:

Unfortunately no. Long story short. The woman who owned the home came out after I had washed around her front entrance and started drying the Mahogany doors with a bath towel. She was rubbing the towel side to side hard enough against the surface and started taking the finish off the door. Myself and my wife told her to stop numerous times be she just kept at it like a madwoman. Not just on one door but on both doors and part of the arched framing that went upwards of about 15ft. I knew what she was up to and sure enough I got a call from my insurance company 2 days later that she had put in a claim. After a wood refinishing guy came and checked the doors out they determined that it was her fault for rubbing the doors down with a bath towel and not not mine. Come to find out after talking to the husband, they were looking to get the doors refinished anyway because they were getting divorced and selling the house. I guess she thought it would save them a couple of bucks if my $$ paid for it. It didn't happen! :shakehead:

They were simular to this but only double and no glass on the sides, just on the top.

Well, I guess this is a good time to tell the story about a certain hood cleaner that dropped an exhaust fan off of a 3 story building after it rolled down the roof, chunking up shingles all the way down. It's a great story!

I remember getting a call from a potential customer I had just bid on the week prior. It was on a Saturday morning and I remember the anger in his voice telling me what a scam and overpriced jerk I was. He said that he was going to tell every restaurant owner in the valley of my bad business practices of ripping people off!

See, what happened was I had bid his restaurant and included hinges for the fan. I told him that there was NO WAY I could clean it properly without them; it was too dangerous, I remember telling him. Included in my bid was a copy of my insurance and all the legal paperwork showing that I was a legitimate company, not somebody's brother in law that does this stuff on the side.

Well, what happened was he didn't like my bid because it was about 4x the price of "a guy" told him it should be. Just so happens, this "guy" had a brother in law who "could" clean it for way less.

What happened next is freakin hilarious!!!

I guess what happened was this bro-in-law took the fan off the duct up top and tipped it back so he could try to scrape a 3 story duct with a screw on puddy knife and a painters pole, but what the genius didn't realize was that there were no hinges attached to the fan and the fan just took off down the roof. It was a pretty big fan too.

The fan was rolling down the roof, cutting and throwing electrical wires everywhere then came to a crashing halt in the middle of the parking lot. Just picture this bozo up on the roof holding his little painters pole, eyes as big as golf balls, Bahahahahha!

The restaurant owner couldn't make a claim on the "guys" insurance because - surprise, surprise - He didn't have any. Or at least the restaurant owner didn't think so. The "guy" just climbed down from the roof, got into his 'car' and left. They never heard from him again.

Ah, I love telling that story. Restaurant owners: know who you are hiring before they cost YOU thousands of dollars worth of repairs!

I have forgotten I'm only human and there are some things that just can't be cleaned no matter how hard I try.

Exactly. We are washers not painters, not concrete contractors or stucco contractors. All we can do is clean it. Sometimes we are disappointed if we can't make it look new. That's just how it is. Keep your head up.

If I even THINK that they are expecting more than I can deliver I always tell my customers before hand that I've got a Pressure Washing wand, NOT a Magic wand. They normally laugh and agree. I would much rather under promise and over deliver.
