Advice needed.....

Chris, from here it looks to me like it was poured to look that way. Some kind of weird Decorative Concrete mix maybe?

I have seen that before. It happened to a friends driveway his property got flooded due to irrigation mishap. The driveway had faint signs of the same pattern your showing. It only got more pronounced over time. We thought it was a mold/fungus of sometime.
We never did anything with it or try anything we just looked at it drinking beer, throwing theories out there.

The wierd thing is the sidewalk is 110' long and the black spots are only on about 25' of the walk.

Then it is mineral/Iron. Hit it with a strong solution of Super Irion Out from Lowes or Home Depot. If thats what it is then it should take it out.

Tell me more Ron.
Anything you can tell me?

Most often thats a stamp concrete. It has color in it, most chems themselves will ruin the finish.

That one actually looks more like a bad sealer thats worn. I cant be sure because I cant see it.

You are correct the sealer is worn. I am concerned about putting any chems on this. How would you approach this?

Just try a few of the sugestions on a small area see which works?

I shared these pictures with Craig yesterday. He said it was magnesium staining. It is permanent And runs threw the whole slab.
Craig, does the magnesium come from the bottom up? And what is the cause?

I'm trying to get a better understanding on the difference between calcium carbonate and the magnesium staining.

Please Correct me if I'm wrong.
Calcium carbonate is mineral staining from standing or pooled up hard water. The solids in the water.

Chemistry was never my best subject, but I am pretty interested in this. I've been trying to search the subject and not finding a lot.

From my experience magnesium staining mainly comes up through the concrete. It can also open up the pores of the concrete a bit and allow serious efflorescence to come through. The only way to make it blend is to do an acid wash in a certain way and ten seal it. Even then you might only lighten it 50%.

Here is a pic of the same thing below.
