Alternator question

Which of these is the exciter connection? The spade connector at the top middle or the smaller lug connection near the bottom?

And does that have to be hooked to the switch at start only or can it have 12v continuous on it?

What kind of alternator? Got a pic?

Just curious what this is for?

Is the alternator taking the place of a generator?

Thanks.

Building a 24 volt generator to top off the batteries on the life when they start getting low in the field just so we can finish out the day without having to stop.

So, if I understand this right, the exiter terminal gets 12 v from the key switch and it is probably that smaller lug.

The only thing I have left to figure out is whether that can be a constant 12v while the key is in the ON position or if it has to be hooked up to get power only when it is in the START position.

I wonder how much hp it would takes to spin a 12 volt alternator that would really help a 12 volt burner system.

Not much. They sell 80 amp units in china powered by 2.2hp motors.

Not sure if this helps but my Coleman Powermate Generator makes 5000 watts with a 10hp Briggs engine, I know that a lot of the hot water skids with the 120 volt systems are 2000 watt generators like on a lot of the Landa systems, 5gpm at 3500psi (I have a couple of those) so I would think that as long as you have 2000 watts running whether it is AC volt or 12 volt, it should keep up with the burner unless I am wrong.

My 8gpm cold water rig makes 20 amps and when I bought it I was told that would be enough amps to run a hot box.

Not sure of what you are trying to do Greg, maybe just get a 2000 watt generator like the hot water skids use and rig up maybe a 5 or 6hp engine, might be easier to just buy a small 2000 watt generator.

Not sure how you would convert the AC voltage to DC for your purposes, that will be interesting to hear from someone here, I am sure someone like Russ J. knows or knows of another solution.
