Hello to all, I havent been on much this summer, fortunately my season is going rather smoothly. I hope everyone else is having a great year. I came across a roof that looks like slate. Was put on in the 1930's and advertised as a slate roof. Come to find out from the home owner tht it is not slate, looks like it, feels like tile, but has a main ingredient of asbestos. Has anyone came across this before and do you know what the effect of SH would be on them. Any input will help, thanks. Manufacturers name is CASE.

From what I have heard about asbestos is that sh will work forsure but you might be opening a can of worms with your city unless you have I think its called abatement license or something like that you just have to be careful with it. IMHO I would definitely ask around or just pass on it for headaches sake hahaha

Im pretty sure someone that has experience with it will chime in and enlighten us with proper procedures and info
Yea, if i could spray it like normal house, get paid and leave, great, but all I need is some nosy neighbor calling me in for improper procedures and lack of proper permits or licenses. Job pays 1200, wouldnt take no more than a few hours, be a shame to pass on it.

yeah I hear you about the 1200 I know there some containment procedures that are involved when cleaning the roof and the city would not get involved but I have no ideas what they are?

Clean it the same as if it were a shingle roof. What surprises me though is that the roof has lasted since the 1930's. I would make sure that they don't have any per existing problems and have them sign off on it. I'm sure u don't want to be buying them a new roof.

No I dont lol, I didnt want to get into special permits for asbestos though. His downspouts go directly into sewer. I wouldnt think any more asbestos would run off from cleaning it than it would when it was raining

hey monster who did your website that's pretty cool bro!!
When I built the site I had to snag a few photos off google to help. I had not needed photos before then and the few that I had were not of very good resolution for the site. I have tken a bunch this year and there are only few left I think that are not mine but as soon as things slow down for me this year Im redoing the whole site

As Larry said, clean them the same way you would with shingles. You need to beef up your mix and make it "hotter" though. Normally I go with a 30/70 but with asbestos you need to go with something more like a 40/60. Asbestos also absorbs the mix so you are going to use almost double what you use on asphalt. Keep in mind that asbestos shingles are very brittle and you can not walk on them. Be carefull with ladder stabilzers also. There is a lot of pressure focused on the arms of the stabilizer that can break the tiles easily. Asbestos shingles, either roof or siding, are safe to be around and cleaned with a soft wash mix. They only become dangerous when they are broken and when they do break ... that is when asbestos particles become airborn and inhaled.

Here is a link to a nasty asbestos roof. It actually looks like black shingles but they are white. It took two full applications and on day two we had to go back and "spot treat" a few areas. After a few good rain events, the shingles looked much better than the "after" picture below.

Also, you might want to disconect the down spouts and collect any roof mix run-off if it is tapped directly into the sewer system.
