I'm serious, the wife and I have narrowed it down to one of these name combos listed. The child isn't due until the 12th of August, but our doc says the kid is so big now, she won't let him go longer than the 2nd, or he'll be over 10 #s.

Since I don't want my lovely lady wife to ### my head in as I sleep, we go on or before 7:00 am Thursday next.

Your mission is to vote for the moniker we must add afterwards.

If you absolutely can't find a choice you like, feel free to suggest.

Some background: Tricia is 100% Irish, I'm 1/2 Norwegian, 1/4 Lithuanian, and the rest is probably Danish and Dutch. (My ancestors basically surround the North Sea.) Saint names are good, in my Dad's (Lithuanian) family the male line of decent was traditionally denoted by the name Joseph Paul, but my Dad was named Paul Joseph because when he was born, his father and both grandfathers lived in one house, and were all named Joe.

Herkimer is a Germanic word that means, "Bearer of the Great Spear", which is appealing (and probably accurate) and Mysterioso is just too cool to be ignored.

Marcus Epiphanius is good Latin naming practice, and translates as, "The Reborn Warrior" and carries connotations of religious awakening.

Fenner is actually an early English word for, "A very competent man." Ironic isn't it?

Paul Joseph is my father, and would honor my ancestors back to the monkeys.

Other names we have considered include: Seamus, Julius, Finbar, Peter, Archer, Cacciatore, Orien, Jefferson and a host of others.

Help a brother out, folks.

No offense boss, but Id be pretty angry if I got named something like that. Seamus isnt exactly a child friendly name. If you have to have some kind of off the wall name like herkimer make it the middle name. I would have laughed that kid off the playground when I was younger. Kids can be jerks sometimes. Fenner is original yet not too odd so I voted for that

Celeste, Tricia's Maiden name is Flahive, which rhymes with "have".

Charlie, Seamus is gaelic for James, and is pronounced "shay-mus" (you probably know this) and is often shortened to Shea (shay) by the Irish. I think other choices here listed are less kid friendly than that, but I hear what you're saying.

My take on names is that people that like their names and those that dislike their names are about evenly split on why: Half think their name too common, half think it too odd. I'm guessing it has little to do with the name, and more to do with personality.

With that said, Sunbeam and Moonchild are never going to make my list!

I forgot to mention that Peter Charles Millen was my great-uncle that was awarded a posthumus medal in WWII for valor as a navy oiler that remained at his post to get a sinking destroyer (USS Jarvis) from blocking a tactically significant channel during the battle of the Leyte Gulf. (I think.)

As a kid I was always going to name my first son after him (he wasn't twenty when he died.) Unfortunately, when I believed I would never marry or have kids, I named a dog Pete, and I'm not sure how it would look if people thought my boy was named for my (really great) dog!.

Well how's this for a stupid question.....is this your first son? Do you have a major objection to having a Jr or II ? Why don't men name their sons after them anymore? I could never convince Roger to name our son after him. His name is Adron Holt - Adron was Roger's mother's grandfather's name and Holt is my maiden name.

Numero Uno

Yeah, this is our first child. (We are late starters) but I'm just not sure I want to do the Jr. thing. I've had a child named for me, and it is an incredible honor, but not one I want to bestow upon myself.

Adron Holt is a great name, I was always one of four or five Scotts in my classes as a kid, and envied those with less common names. I'll bet there are no others in Adron's class, and that is cool by me.

dude,
I've got 3 girls and for the last 2 we had a short list of names and waited till after they were born to name them. I enjoyed spending time with them and their mother; really taking time to relax and enjoy the miracle. After some time and prayer, the names came naturally. Naming can be soooo stressful. Forget about it. Enjoy the miracle dude. I know everybody talks about the "miracle" but seriously nothing prepares you for ....the joy.

That's how we did it Ryan - my first two girls were "pre-named". The third girl had the short list and the right name just landed on her within a couple hours. Finally the boy came but it was already decided as well. You are so so right about the miracle part though :)

Celeste

Congrats Kevin! I'm entirely gassed up for this, I can't wait to meet him.

B.A., I hear just what you are saying. We won't decide until we think the name fits the little guy. People have always said I don't "look like a Scott".

This is fun for me though, to hear other people's experiences, and opinions on names.

I'm pretty sure there is no right or wrong method, except maybe the one in the old joke.

Keep 'em comin' folks!:)

Congrats Scott on your new "hunting buddy'!
I LIKE the first name Fenner myself.
That way, he will be named after your friend and mine KEN Fenner ;)

OR, since Patricia is IRISH and you are Norweigan, how about Lars Ericksen Millen ?
You can call him Larry or Eric.

I too am 'blessed" with an IRISH girlfriend, LOL
Eileen O'Riordan - is THAT IRISH enough ?
Shane Millen sounds cool, very Manly.
Yeah, I like that Scott, and it would keep the S "Theme" going, you know Scott, Stainless, etc, etc.
It MIGHT be an 'easy sell" to Patricia, since Shane IS an Irish name.

Gotta give the little guy an indication of his Norweigan/Dutch ancestry too, so now we gotta come up with a middle name for Shane Millen ?
Heck, Shane Eriksen Millen, now THAT is a manly name if I ever heard one ?

JP.. would be a cute nick name. Dan Cosgrove

if you were chinese i could help you. just take a bunch of forks and knifes and throw them up in the air, when they hit the ground the sound is the name.

Alright, the new guy has joined the firm: At 1838 CDT, yesterday, the second of August, my firstborn son was delivered in Methodist Hospital, Omaha, NE.

Mom and the new heir are doing fine, and resting. Dad and the dog are exhausted, and fairly certain we are out of our depth!

We named him Joseph Paul in honor of my father and grandfather, and their fathers before them, of old. He is a gorgeous boy, and further proof that I managed to marry far above myself.

I have done many things in my life, for good and ill...Joseph is easily the greatest thing I've ever done. My wife and God couldn't have possibly given me a better gift in this life.

Thank you for all the help and support you have lent here and elsewhere. My son would have a far less successful father were it not for you fine people. It is my honor to count so many of you among my friends.

Pics will come soon, I promise!
