I have a 5x5 Front porch concrete that is painted with that old grey
paint a lady wants taken to bare concrete, it has about 4 steps
what would be the best way(chemical) to strip with and what would be a
proper bid ? I bid $250 and she said ok is that too low ?

Thx

Hi Rob,

That's what I like to see, another guy from The Lou!! I grew up about 45 min. outside of stl on I44, I really miss the area.

As far as your chems go, you need to hook up with a guy in STL named Russ Cissell. Don't remember his #, but his website is: www.woodstrip.com. Sells GREAT stuff, reasonably priced. He sells chems for everything you need, good luck,

Only you know if it is to low or not...

I bet you could get the paint off with heat and pressure only, but if no heat, you could use strip it, or strip x from sherwin williams...

Good Luck,

Matt

Ron Saw a Post By You ?

Hi Ron,
Thanks for your input, Also, I was reading through some of the post's
and saw yours about not doing wood anymore, or something like that
and I was just wondering why ? and what has been your experience
with this so far compared to other types of work, flat work, house wash,
fleets, etc.. just trying to figure out the most profitable end of this biz.?

hi fitz

wood is more restoration work then just cleaning.
If you do mostly wood and have a market for it im sure you can do just fine.
In my opinion in states that have a short season it is real tuff for a one man show to make enuff money to cover you for the year.
If you have a small crew then it would be better.
After the cost of your basic stuff then you need quite a bit of other things to do wood.
12 volt spray system,3 kinds of stripper,3 kinds of sealer,hammer,fasteners,saw,drill,duel wand,belt sander,9" polisher/sander,the de-furring pads for it,color samples,belt sander,2 kinds of brightner,moisture meter,tarps,plastic,duct tape,plywood screens,rags,brush's,rollers,pads,pans,maybe even a airless paint machine,and prob 10 other things im missing.
Then you get rained out, droughted out,and you need to put a lot of work into each sale. It takes a long time to get a good customer repete buissness going.
It is a lot easyer to train someone to run a surface cleaner or wash a truck then to watch a guy apply a stripper that can burn him or get in his eye.
If you look at the tools for doing houses[log cabins, second story decks,ect...] then add ladders,scaffolding,ect.....
There are way's to skimp on this list but you need to be good and be fast. There are only so meny hrs in a day. Can you strip, nuet, repair, defur, and seal a deck in a reasonable amont of time? How meny can you do in a season by yourself?
Now you take a day of washing trucks,or night's.
Wash 10 trucks a day at $40 each. Longer season, easyer to train your help so you can get bigger, less tools, contracts,
CONTRACT'S!!!!!!!!!
MONEY YOU CAN COUNT ON.
flatwork, you can get a contract
hoods, you can get a contract
fleet's,you can get a contract
When you have contract's you have something to show the bank.
If you sell you can transfer them
contract's have worth.
You dont get meny contract's with wood.
Your repete buissness is a min of a year later with wood.
Im going to concentrate on house washing during the AM and fleetwashing/flatwork at night/weekends.
the contracts are going to be the bread and butter
the other stuff is gravy.
about 6 chems.,a couple of extra tools[x-jet,surface cleaner's,12 volt set-up to apply chem,a recovery system]
i have all the tool's[except recovery] ive washed everything ive got my mind on washing. I have a steady base of 25 trucks to get me started and im going for it.[not this weekend we are getting 5 to 10 inc of snow]
I have read over 5000 posts and visited and read over 200 sites
I have read all most every MSDS on all kinds of chems and researched the active ingreadents. I know why they are used and how to handle them safely.
All of my equipment is completely paid off by working part-time for 2 1/2 years without taking one thin dime.
IM READY TO START FOR REAL.
advertising, insurance, phone, fuel, and chem are the bulk of my overhead cost's.
If i lived where i could "do wood" year round, then i would sing a diffrent toon. In NJ you get 9 months to fit in a year's worth of wood. Im not that good. Also in that 9 months 1/3 of your time is doing est. and rain days. I only sell the fleetwash once and can make $5000 or more per year, per sale.[small fleet's 3 or 4 trucks at $40 each, they add-up]

Understood..

Hi Ron,
I totally see where you are coming from, Im in the same boat,
one man show etc.. maybe if I get a house job and they want wood
rest. done I might sub it out and make a little on the side otherwise
in the beginning Im going after jobs where I can get in and out in under
3-4 hours, Fleets, flatwork, houses etc.. By the way, what chems are the best
that you've used, ? or do you just mix your own chems ?
I imagine with the fuel increase your prices will be a bit higher this
season.?
Also, what has been the best bang for your buck as for as advertising
goes: ?

rfitz, ride over with a few of the guys from MO for the roundtable meeting next week and I can give you some tips on doing wood.
There will be some demos on Roof Cleaning and maybe a chance to do some wood if time permits. I am praying for the weather to work out for us.

fitz/Steve

if i were you i would go to that round table meeting.
I would also take-up steve's offer.
I would also ask Steve to bring the 1 gal size of his ATLAS
a gal of wet wax. A gal of his house wash. And the gal. size on anything that can be used on the surfaces that you plan on cleaning.
You save on shipping cost's and get a free demo on how to use them.
This will be of great importance to you and help you out tremendously. A far better advantage then i have ever gotten.

Do you know how to 2 step when truck washing?
You being this close to a chem dealer[steve] is such a money saver and the chems ive used from Steve have worked well for me. I still use some Delco stuff and e-spec stuff.
Steve-in my opinion your web site could be set-up a little better
I forget what rpc??? dose and need to click each one, then click the MSDS,then go and find the price, then go and look up shipping.
It is a bit of a pain in the butt.
I think you could cut down on your phone time if your site was better set-up.
Please take this as constructive crit. and not a complaint.
Fitz-for trucks, do a free demo.
For houses a simple phone book ad[time is running out] and a small ad in the newspaper.
Flatwork- you must find property managers and find a way to get your foot in the door.

Thanks for the input. I usually have a reason for everything I do. The website was originally setup long before we had the lineup of products we now have. I had my son-n-law set the chemical catalogs up this way when we were mailing out CD catalogs long before I posted prices on the site after many request. It saves me and the customer time by being able to print their own MSDS. I was reluctant about posting prices because some people just look at prices without considering how concentrated they really are and I wanted to make sure everyone understood everything. I can save you time on which chemical you need if you tell me what your needs are, thus giving you more time to do the other things you need to do. As for the shipping I look at every order seperate and ship the most cost effective way for that customer, no blanket method of shipping. This saves you money. I feel I give better customer service by talking on the phone to each customer, that way they do not get the "run around" like some of the others do. I get that with some of the vendors I purchase from myself. I just found the "right person" to deal with at a packaging company locally this past Friday. I let her know some of the other people at that company were not as helpful as her. Guess what, she said she would have the answers I needed this Monday. THAT is the way to do business.

good points steve

i just think some people are just reluctant to call.
Look how meny people vist these bulletin boards and maybe only 10% ever post anything.
Your way seem's to be working and it's your buissness.
If it ever stops snowing, ill be calling you.

We are the only ones carrying Extreme Solutions products. Russ Cissell is working on new product development. If you are interested in his products, email or call me.

We're glad to help.

P.S. Russ Cissell of Extreme Solutions and Reed are holding a Round Table meeting in MO. Email Russ @ imrcc1@aol.com and he'll give you the info. If you want excellent wood care info, go see Russ.

Round Table

St Louis Round Table

Location: 403A Droste Road, St Charles MO
Saturday the 22nd at 12:30pm
If you need directions you can call 636-899-1769

We will not be doing any product demonstrations because it goes against everything the round table meetings represent. The meetings were developed to benefit contractors not product vendors. I have had an overwhelming amount of requests for demonstrations so we are going to have a product demo day around the 15th of March.

In addition to the standard information, we hope to touch on:

Equipment repair and maintenance
Marketing
Estimating
Salesmanship
Legal Concerns
Cleaning methods
Environmental concerns
And any other question you bring to the table.

We are looking forward to a strong turn out. Hope to see you there!

Best of Luck
