Blower wheel shredded

Hey Russ, have you ever seen a blower motor shred like the pictures attached? I flipped my on switch yesterday to heat up my water and the blower made this loud cling, cling sound and everything shut off. I realized it blew a fuse, but when I opened the transformer box and looked inside, the blower wheel blades fell out in my hands. I know I have to replace the wheel, but what could have caused this to happen. The assembly has been bolted up inside for about 5 years and I've never had any problems with it. Any advice?

Wow! This is very interesting.

What brand of skid is that?

What brand of blower?

Chris, the system is manufactured by Benson Enterprises out of Knoxville, TN. The blower is a Fasco 12V 4500 RPM. The blower wheel is a Wayne 20673, but it doesn't resemble the attached. I believe the assembly comes a complete burner system Wayne MSR-DC.

I see that happen every once in a great while. One blade may get weak and snap, and when it does, it takes the rest with it. A new fan ought to fix you right up.

I have had it happen, as well. It was a pain finding the replacement wheel, because the local guys just wanted to sell me a machine, since mine was toast. They are available, and it is a simple fix.

Russ, that is a great price.

When that happens, do you think that it could have damaged the electric motor at all or is the motor safe and strong where the damage to the fan is not likely?

Thanks.

The only thing you've got to worry about is making sure ALL the shrapnel is picked out of the burner. The motor shouldn't be hurt at all.

Joey, that is a 5/16" shaft, not a 1/2", right?

Russ J, that is correct. The shaft is 5/16" and the blower wheel is part number 20673 from Wayne Combustion Systems. It measures 3 1/8" X 4 1/4".

Those dimensions are for another fan than the one I quoted you. The one you need is a 2920, $17.50. It has a 1/2" bore and comes with a bushing to adapt to 5/16". It will take me a few days to get that one in. Let me know.

Russ, I have attached a few pages from the booklet that came with my burner unit. It looks as though the blower wheel is part 20673. Please let me know if you see other wise. I appreciate your help.
