Burner fuel rate

I was working on the Delco skid the other day (just swapping out filters and general maintenance stuff) and got to noticing that I'm out of diesel AGAIN. I stuck the fuel line in a 5 gallon can of diesel and it sucked it dry in about 10 minutes. I was stunned at how fast it drank it. With the hose open (out of the ball valve, no trigger gun) I was getting 130 degree water. It ran great, just chugged the fuel. What gives??

That machine should use about 2.75 gallons per hour. Did you have both lines in the diesel can? The pump moves more fuel than the nozzle can use, so it bypasses back to the tank.

That makes sense. I only had the supply line (one with the filter) in the can. The return line was still hooked into the washer's tank. I didn't check to see if there was more fuel in there then before I started.
