Burner problem

Cleaned an oil stained driveway for a friend of mine and my burner was acting up. At first it wouldn't work at all then it would come on run for awhile then shut off, then come on a little later run for a few minutes then shut off again... Any ideas???

Okay, thanks. That just reminded me that someone told me to pull the probe out and clean it up and I forgot to do that. I'll try that first, thanks.

Maybe air leak at the fuel filter, especially if its the plastic kind.

Just changed the filter, I'll double check and make sure it's tight.

Schmoots in the fuel line can make them intermittent. Try blowing through the supply line.

Okay, new thermostat still no worky. Pulled the fuel line, its clear, left it disconnected where it goes in, kinda pointed out to the side and fired up the machine. Hit the trigger and no fuel(I did this recently after I changed the filter and had good flow). I'm thinking it might be the flow switch??? There is a little bleeder screw on the side that I loosened while it was running and it started squirting diesel so I don't think its the fuel pump.

It may have a pressure switch sticking......Install a flow switch

Fuel should always be flowing through the pump and the extra flows back to the tank, that is why you have a return line. The only line that diesel is stopped from flowing through due to a thermostat or flow switch/pressure switch is the steel line that goes from the pump into where the ignitors/fuel nozzle is.

Also if you are pulling your line from the inlet of your fuel pump all you are doing is pulling air into the system. The fuel pump on the burner pulls the fuel from the tank, through the filter, then into the fuel pump assembly. The test you are doing to with the gun is only good if you disconnect that steel line off the fuel pump.

Hook everything back up and see if you have fuel going in the return line back to the tank. The burner has to be on, but you do not need flow of any water for this test to work. If you have no fuel going back to the tank, bleed the pump for a minute or until you have a steady flow of diesel coming out. If still no diesel, take the inlet line from the filter and blow it back to the tank, also check your filter for fuel.

I have never seen a fuel pump go, I am sure it happens, but these pumps seem to be good, as long as you only feed it diesel/kerosene.

A bigger piece of schmootz in the tank can float around and keep getting stuck on the fuel line.

change the Fuel filter and blow some air thru the supply line from the filter back, start there. If you find the fuel line clogged, pump out the tank.

This is brand new(NAPA Filter by the way)

No fuel here

Lots of fuel here when I loosened this little bleeder.

Is this the flow switch? Could this be the problem?

If the fuel filter is new, and I'm getting fuel from the little bleeder(pumps working)its gotta be the little flow switch doo hickey... Right? Am I missing something?

Take the fan motor off spin it an see if spins free if it has a dead spot in it that could be the problem with the on again off again heat issues.Just a thought mine did that once.I was the fan motor that went bad.

Thanks, the fan motor is blowing, I can feel air coming out of the hole in the top of the burner.

I understand its blowing but if it is going bad there will be a dead spot in it that when it stalls just enough to let the air fuel mixture get off the flame will go out.Mine would work sometime an then it would load up with fuel and light an it looked a smoke stack. If you havent had it tuned up in the last little bit those electrode thingys could be off as well.Good Luck with it.

Thanks, I'll check out the blower and motor.
