Can a system be considered fire safe even if it is not cleaned per NFPA 96 (i.e. ENTIRE exhaust system cleaned to BARE METAL)?

11.4.1 Upon inspection, if found to be contaminated with deposits from grease-laden vapors, the entire exhaust system shall be cleaned by a properly trained, qualified, and certified company or person(s) acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction in accordance with Section 11.3

11.4.2 Hoods, grease, removal devices, fans, ducts and other appurtenances shall be cleaned to bare metal prior to surfaces becoming heavily contaminated with grease or oily sludge.

This is the 2001 edition but I think the 2004 says pretty much the same thing.

Here we go again, what do you mean by safe? Safe from burning or safe from spreading into the building?

This sound like another potato, potato argument, wait that doesn't work unless you can here me say it.

I know how about (What temp do you like your wash water to be? 195 or 200) i tend to lean toward 194.5 myself

Matt,

Yes it can. I mean, no it can't. Uh, I mean maybe yes and maybe no, depending upon you perspective - no I mean, er, uh, well - humphh - that's a positive maybe. Hope this helps.

Many years ago my dad was a plastering contractor. He was often asked, “Do you guarantee your work?” He always answered “Yes, I guarantee it’s gonna crack!” That’s what plaster does.

What does grease do if it gets hot enough?!

too many variables.Totally safe no,but the farther away from the ignition source the inaccesible area is the safer it would be,but than again it would be closer to the roof if it did catch fire and have a better chance of burning the building down!!! Lol!!MY VOTE NOT SAFE! But nothing is really safe.Matt, I think you should try and get coal miners insurance it might be cheaper!

I was talking with a fire marshal today about exhaust cleaning. He said we could be very easly found responsible if not cleaned according to standards.According to him,he has been at restaurant fires and liquified ignited grease was pouring down from the exhaust on to the floor. A properly installed duct system will handle a fire if a coating of grease is on it.But an abundance of grease on fire running everywhere is hard to get under control.

Sometimes the access doors are there, but they simply do not ever get opened and cleaned.
Out of sight out of mind.
Or maybe "inaccessible" since the access door is above a ceiling tile????

This is a funky question. Whats with the funky questions. :p
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to here it, does it still make a noise? :p

To many variables to answer this question. It would have to be evaluated on a case by case situation. Goat.

Let's see, if you have a 5' 10" hood cleaner with a 6' step ladder they should be able to reach about 10 to 11' high, depending on arme length. So anything over 11' would be considered inaccessible. :p

Kory-what are you talking about?

I think he is refering to the picture in Josh's signature.

"well, there were a lot of screws to take it off"..... that's what was told to one of my customers from their former hood cleaner

Dredging up these old posts brings up guys who are no longer around. What happened to Art Hall, Mtngoat, Safeclean and Richard at RJTravel. Richard I know is still in the biz, what happened to the rest?

Thanks for pointing that out to me!
