Dual Delavans

There is a very fine line when operating dual 12V Delavan 5gpm 60psi pumps.

I tried multiple combinations of hose size, length, nozzles, guns and figured out the best combination for running one or two pumps together in tandem.

I talked to Bob with Pressure Tek at the NC round table and he says that the new Delavans are no longer available to adjust to 100psi. They are fixed at 5gpm 60psi.

The most each pump will output under a load (100-200ft 5/8 hose and a #40 nozzle) is 3gpm.

Running 2 pumps together in tandem took some tweaking to get it to double the output to a maximum of 6gpm.

The slightest little bit of restriction whether it be in the hose, gun, filter or nozzle will cause the dual system to bog down and produce less flow than the maximum of 6gpm.

60psi is not enough pressure to push a full 10gpm. If you want a 10+gpm roof rig, get a gas powered setup.

Dual Delavans

Hose: 5/8 works for one pump but not two in tandem. 5/8 hose is too small and will cause the pumps to cycle on and off.
3/4 hose is what you need for the dual setup.

Gun: Regular garden guns are too restrictive, so are the poly guns. Best cheap guns I have found are either the high flow twist guns http://www.lrnelson.com/products/model.cfm?MODEL=151 or
3/4 full port ball valve with adapters to fit a coupler for interchangeable nozzles. Have not tried the expensive accuspray guns.

Filter: Bogs the dual system down too much. No filter recommended.

Nozzles: The #30 or #40 works best for one pump, dual pumps need #60 nozzles.

Great Post Mike!
I found the 5/8 hose adequate for dual shurflo's.
However, the Delevan 5800 is a larger pump.
I can see how with only 60 psi pushing a lot of GPM you might be better off with 3/4 hose.
Thank you for your research!
We can all make life better for each other with information like this!

looks like i may go with the BIGGER hose after all ..... anyone want to buy some 5/8 ? hahahahaha
I Hear Squirtgun may be in the market for some ? :)

new update ! split the dual delavans into two units both with 300 feet of 5/8 hose on stainless Titans! all running off a 225 leg tank full of "love"
What do you do Russ ?
Take two guns up on a roof

I have people that work forme dude ! I CAN DO TWO AT ONCE AS WELL !

then in a real pinch I have a back up
Great Idea.
We did this on our old box truck, two reels/pumps sucking from one giant tank.
never thirsty that a way.

Got a guy from St Louis and his wife flying into Tampa to learn roof cleaning Friday Russ.

cool ...... remember when teaching always show him how and why not to as well as how too!
Things have been a tad slow Russ.
Many wildfires burning, and folks advised to stay inside!
I HOPE to get a big azz tile roof, but have a shingle to do if nothing else.

I like to train people on at least 3 roofs.

I will try and take some pictures of his training day ?

If you want a great inline filter go to a irrigation distributor , ask for a strainer or filter for drip irrigation . it is a plastic y type strainer with a stainless steel filter basket , holds up great , easy to clean , plumb it in just before your pump . They are 3/4 inch mpt , and cost between 16 and 20 dollars .
