Excel pressure washers

Are the Excel pressure washers at Home Depot a good brand? My friend and I are starting a little side business and are thinking about getting the 3500 PSI PW for $999. That's about as much money as we can afford. What do you all suggest?

Our first unit was a little 2500 PSI Excel from Home Depot. It was actually a refurbished unit that they had on sale for $300. That little machine kicked butt. For kicks one time I sat down and figured out that little cold water unit has cleaned enough decks to bring in around $70,000 since we started using it. Never had to do anything but change the oil and fill it with gas.

Talk about a return on investment, huh? :)

Now we use the big trailer/truck mounted hot water units on most everything, but that little Excel really did the job. I still have it at home for when I want to do something with it around the house and not have to bring a big unit home to work with.

I don't know if they still put Cat pumps on them like we have, but if they do I would absolutely get one. We still have two Excel's we use on smaller deck jobs and they are great.

Shane,

I always see refurbished units over at Home Depot, they're usually in the paint department near the paint sprayers. You might want to check around to a few local HD's and see if they have any. I know they still carry the same warranties on them as new one's and you might be able to get a few hundred bucks chopped off that $999 price by finding one.

Shane,
I know a lot of guys don't advocate direct drive units, but I've had two from HD that have paid themselves off dozens of times over. I have one with a Cat pump and one with an AR pump, and both have worked flawlessly. I also have a belt drive unit that seems to work about the same, except it is alot heavier to move around. If you're just starting out, I'd say the Excell unit will do fine. In time, when the $$ start to flow, you can always upgrade to better units and keep this one as a backup.

I use this same unit and love it. That having been said, don't lose your reciept. I went through 3 before I got a keeper. The warranty on these units is 90 days if it is being used commercially. The pump (AR) went out after 6 months and I found a rebuilt Comet 4040 at Northern for $100 and had the AR rebuilt for $100, so now I have a spare.
