generator rebuild

How difficult is it to totally refurbish a 120v generator?

Would you DIY or give to profesisonal?

Generator putting out around 106V at optimal rpm, what parts would need replacing ?

Transformers are burning out to quick, about every 50 hours and burner is loading up before intiating burn, which causes nice flame from stack.

Thanks for any help?

++voltage regulator , maybe take it to a electric motor repair shop

The last time i had a problem with one of mine , it only cost $25 for them to tell me it was trash!

Update - Spoke with generator technician. Said generator either works or doesn't. No in between - "being a voltage drop". Checked rpm - Good
Looked at belts. Generator belt is cracked. Thinking now that I am losing my rpms to the generator due to loose belt, I hope.

Have not replaced belts before but looks likes thats the next step.

If anybody has tips, feel free to share. (Landa 4.8 gal)

I will keep this thread updated for those interested, being that this all started last year with burner on the fritz due to transformers acting up.

I have rebuilt generators before. As a rule the generator either works or it does not. If it is putting out the wrong voltage the problem is usually an RPM problem. As an engine wears in the RPM will change a little a minor adjustment will fix the problem in most cases. The pully on the generator should be slightly smaller than the motor pulley. a minimum Rpm is around 3600 RPM and most engines run at 3400 RPM. Adjust the voltage by running the burner while reading the voltage with a volt meter speed up the Rpm until you get 120 Volts. When the load is off the voltage will spike to about 135 volts.

If your Generator has Capacitors they may be the problem instead of the Generator. Try replacing them first.

Update: It was the capacitor. Yee-Haw. After two burned up transformers. I hope somebody finds this thread when they have a problem with a voltmaster AB-25 generator "Landa".

Oh yea, thanks for the info John, you were a big help. This problem was starting to drive me nuts

Well I bought the whole trailer rig last year for a lump sum. I have found the generator online for about 275.00. The capacitor was 32.00, bought locally.
