grease duct filtration

I have a McDonalds, Pentagon City Mall (not in the pentagon) that has a filtration system in the duct, The managers said I don't have to worry about it because it is self cleaning and they wash it every 3 or 4 months, well I'm not buying that.
I think it is probably supposed to be cleaned at least weekly if not daily, I haven't seen anything self cleaning that worked well at all, especially one that is only ran every 3 months or so.
Anyway I couldn't get into the ceiling that day while they where cooking and I am going beck to look at it, has anyone had to deal with one of these or know how it works. The name on the unit is (AIRIA) I have had no luck finding anything under that name and couldn't get close enough to get any other info.
Any info would be nice

Is this a water wash hood? The 2 brands I have seen turn on the water wash when the exhaust fan is tunred off at the end of the day. Of course if the fan is never turned off, the water wash never operates. Problems I have found w/water wash hoods , in order of what I have seen.
1. no soap
2. plugged soap lines
3. plugged nozzles
4. plugged drain lines.
5. bad pump
Have you thought of contacting McDonalds in Chicago to see if they have any info that might help identify the mfg of this system.

We have a few systems that have coils installed in the duct. They are used to reclaim some of the heat that is being taken out of the kitchen. We clean these coils whenever we clean the system. These are not McD's tho.

The water wash systems that we do have no filters. The automatic cleaning takes place in the canopy. As Douglas pointed out they do have their problems.

Thank you Dave, for reminding me about the heat exchanger in some water wash hoods. The coils I have seen are copper or aluminum. When cleaning them, do not let the caustic cleaning solutions stay on very long before washing them clean. I had a Gaylord guy tell me that the caustic can eat holes in the metal. Usually I just use hot water, keeping about 8 inche or more from the fins. Don't forget the intake air fan and filters. They can be washed w/just hot water, no chemicle. When we start to do a water wash hood, we hit the STOP button on the fan several times to get the grease softened a bit before we start to work.
At present we only do 2 places w/water wash hoods. One of which has 7 hoods in it.

Nope to both replies.
This store has normal McDonalds hoods, but in the ceiling it has what would look at first glance to be an A/c unit. A 6X6X4 box, the ducts from the three hoods goes in one side and out the other to the fan, one side of it appears to open, and someone has gone to the trouble of building a platform to stand on in the ceiling. It is definitely some kind of filtration unit, I just could not open up the ceiling enough to climb up there while they where cooking. I will get some pics when I go look at it.
