Grounding a battery

Can I run a battery cable from the negative terminal of the battery to the frame of a trailer/vehicle sheet metal, or does it have to be grounded to the powerwasher skid that has the starter on it? The skid I have in mind is bolted into some wood, not touching any metal in the vehicle.

It needs to be grounded to the skid. My ground runs to my skid and from the skid to my trailer frame. I also have my generator grounded to my trailer frame.

It sounds like you are implying it needs to be grounded to both. Is that correct?

Electrical grounding of machines

In my BulletProofing class, we talk about electrical grounding..
Run ground wires appropriately, AND direct wiring, as insurance.
Redundancy runs aircraft, and racecars.
Use stainless steel star washers, anti-seize compound, and any other tool which adds strength to your system.
Make sure rubber-mounted engines have effective ground cables, or yours could be another statistic in flaming failure.
bad connections kill starters, Ignitors, solenoids, fuse Holders, batteries, and people.

If you don't know electricity, think of flow and pressure..
a bad connection is a flow restrictor, can generate friction heat, waste otherwise useable energy,
..and can ruin an otherwise Sustainable relationship or demonstration.

Gee.. I wonder if I could explain that to my in-laws this way. naaah.

I need you to spell it out for me Jerry. What do you mean by direct wiring? Anti-seize compound is for the electrical connections? So I run a battery cable from the negative terminal on the battery to the skid frame, and then from the skid frame to the vehicle metal?

JBurd if your skid frame is grounded then you need to be grounded just to your skid frame. My trailer bed is wood so I ran a ground wire from my skid frame to my trailer frame. My battery is grounded to my skid frame, my skid frame is grounded to my trailer frame and my generator is also grounded to my trailer frame. I'm no expert but all of your equipment should be grounded to prevent issues Jerry mentioned in his post. Think of it as preventive maintenance.

Ground the battery to the engine block.
