And now I'm screwed.

Satuday morning, something happened to my operating system. I'm not sure what, as I have not opened any attachments or installed anything.

Anyway, I can't access a single thing on my new ( 3 month old ) laptop. Currently, I'm using my son's computer ( my old one ).

I have access to recent Quickbooks backups (on floppy), but everything else would be lost..........emails, address book entries recently added, calendar events, favorites, and a couple of projects I've been working on in Word/Excel.

Lucky for me, my uncle is in the computer business and one of his friends is coming over tomorrow afternoon to remove the hard drive from my laptop and extract the files. Then I'll run a system restore and begin the process of installing/restoring everything. Hopefully he'll be able to recover the data.

Moral of the story....................BACK IT UP!

Automated back up to redundant external hard drives.
No Worries!

In our move, I lost my quickbooks backup on my laptop. I usually just backup on a thumb drive and I move that back and fourth from my laptop and the office computer. Well I lost it and I had not backed it up on my office computer, then my laptop fried itself. This has taught me to always have 2 back ups.

I have a 500 GB External Western Digital Black Book and a 320 GB Internal Seagate Hard Drive in my desktop computer. I use my Black Book to act as my server drive and I can access it from any computer in the house including my wireless laptop. I backup my Black Book every 2 weeks. The only thing on my computers harddrive is the operating system so if I have any problems on my computer all I have to do is load the O.S. again.

The really big thing about back ups is to make sure they are not at the same location as the computer that has the data.

What if the office burns down? What if you get robbed and they take everything.

I do my data back ups several different ways. I keep a data back up on CD in the safe at the office. But I also keep one in a safe at home as well.

But now I have the feature with one of my programs to automatically e-mail the databases off at night to home.

Makes data back ups alot easier. Any know if the newer versions of quickbooks has anything like that feature?

I use both CD's and Flash Drives and I allways backup, it saved me a lot of work. Just put the usb flash drive in and I'm up and running again. And it's easy for to take my books to the CPA as he runs my info from the flash drive and has everything he needs instantly in his hands.

same here... and all my apps are web based, so it really doesn't matter as far as the business apps. Now the important thing is the music. 11,000 songs back'd up to 2 drives.
Photos as well.

I back up my quickbooks everyday on an external harddrive. I do worry sometimes though what if my external one takes a crap on me?

I might just try to find a program to upload my backups to my webhost automatically.

Anybody know if there is such a thing?

I use Carbonite. It backs up anything that was changed automatically, every night. Seems worth the $50.

We use Quick Books on line. It is always backed up and it work great

I don't know that I would store my accounting information on any webhost, unless it was encrypted, and even then, I just wouldn't do it.
If you're looking for online backups, look at mozy.com, they seem to have a relatively inexpensive backup solution. I believe they use an encryption algorithm to first encrypt your data before it is stored, which is a huge plus. Hope that helps Pat.

Ok, I got this idea from a friend and I think it's foolproof.

I have a 1 terabyte external hard drive that mirrors all my data, (bids, pictures, videos, etc.) I hammered out a tiny v-notch at the lid of a small fireproof safe for the firewire line and keep the drive locked inside it.

It does not get hot and since is it is not alive, (contrary to popular belief) it does not need fresh air.

For my financial data I use Quickbooks online so I don't have to worry about losing that.
