Help---What Happened To My Surface Cleaner ???

HighTide

New member
I need some advice to what happened to my surface cleaner today. I was cleaning a bank drive-thru and I lost pressure though my surface cleaner nozzles. After turning on its' side, I noticed a bad leak in the swivel. The water was pouring through the hole in the ring (SEE PIC). Did a plug come out of this hole and what do I have to do to fix it?

Thanks for any advice as I have more drive-thrus in the morning.

If water is comming out of the weep hole you need new seals.

Another related question -- how often do you need to add grease to the swivel? Is there a "spin test" or just after so many months or hours? Thanks again.

David, that's a BE swivel. It's just 1 o ring at the inlet valve. Call me Monday and I'll get you the o ring and go through the tear down with you. You need a large pair of snap ring pliers to get it apart.

This might help also

Nigel, your video is awesome. I am now looking forward to taking my BE swivel apart and getting new o-rings for it this week. Thanks everyone for your advice as I am still going through a lot of "firsts" since starting up my company one year ago. I am also looking forward to the pump rebuild session in Myrtle Beach.

You are welcome!

After trying, I am not sure I can get the second half out of the BE swivel housing. Is there a company in Florida (perhaps in Jax) that anyone knows of that I could mail this swivel to be rebuilt? Or should I just throw it away and pay $150 for a new one? What does it cost to rebuild one as it seems that it just needs an o-ring? Thanks for any advice.

Here you go. I had Rex show me how he rebuilds the Whisper Wash Swivels and he can just about do it blindfolded by memory, he is that good.

I do not know if he works on those but I think he could.

Give Rex a call.

I finally got that swivel apart. It took a lot of banging to get the rest of the swivel parts out of the housing. It was the little o-ring just like in Nigel's video. After replacing, I sprayed white lithium grease all over the parts before putting them back in the housing. I will buy a grease gun tomorrow and try out the fixed up surface cleaner with a new swivel bar and nozzles. QUESTION: How much grease do I squirt into the swivel grease nipple because it currently sounds like there is a little sand in the swivel when I spin it??? Thanks.

Glad you got it out, now you see when I say that I thought it had a "C" clip there , I was not joking.

That sand sound in the bearing is not a good sign, grease would be a band aid, the second best thing would be to take the bearings off the shaft and wash then in oil based solvent replace them and pack them with grease, best thing new bearings. Remember the surface cleaner is not a precision piece of equipment so it would still work with bad bearings, but maybe not with extremely bad bearings.

Do not over grease it.1 or 2 pump of the grease gun is plenty over greasing with make it run slow.

I second that, sometimes however on the new ones that do not have grease in the cavity it takes a good 5 pumps of a standard grease gun just for the grease to even start to reach the bearing on the BE swivel.

I also experienced not being able to pump grease into one, I think the cavity is not lined up a the face where the two bearings meet, or the grease nipple is plugged.

A lot of times those grease nipples will get clogged or jammed so you can't pump grease into them. They have kits with many sizes of fittings you can get for times when that happens on the swivel, the tires on certain surface cleaners, etc...
