Hood Filter Aluminum?

Hey all you pros from the "hood". I have a customer that wants me to pw his hood filters every once in a while. He lays them out for me on the dumpster pad.

Question is... Can I use caustic on them? Not sure if they are aluminum or galvanized steel. I thought you shouldn't use caustic on aluminum??? This pic is what they look like...but dirty of course. I'm not wanting to get into hood cleaning, just trying to do my customer a favor.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

If they're aluminum caustic will kill 'em.

That's what I thought. Are the hoods you guys clean stainless steel? Dont you use caustic on them?

The filters are pretty lightweight, which is why I think they are aluminum.

Shoot if they are bad dirty , use purple power degreaser . but wash them quick before they turn white.. Purple power does not react quite as quick as caustic.. If you are using a pretty powerful machine ,Don't put to much pressure right on those type of filters because the tabs will bend loose and the filter will eventually come apart..

Don't forget to lay those out on a FOG Pad.....it will say you loads of time.

If they are aluminum you can soak them for a little while then blast them or just lay them on the ground and ds them both sides.

Don't worry about it eating them too much unless they are REALLY flimsy. Just don't let them soak overnight or you will find an empty tub the next day.
DS with Caustic?

Lay out plastic (he's not paying you to clean the dumpster pad) place your FOG Pad on it. Lay out your pretreated filters and go at it.

Have a neutralizing agent handy (pump-up). I spray neutralizer on the plastic (don't want to leave clean streaks)

Lol, Lou, he actually is paying me to clean the dumpster pad too. I do all their concrete. He lays the filters in the dumpster area when I'm scheduled.

If I ds them with caustic, how long do I let it dwell before any damage? What do you use to neutralize it?

I would give it about 5 minutes. Also no amount of pressure washing is going to get the insides of those filters clean where most of the buildup is.

If you really want to do your customer right, sell him some sturdy galvanized filters so you can soak them for him on every service amd get all the grease out.
Thanks Matt, I'll mention that to him. What would I use to soak them in? There's about 12-15 of them. What chemical and dilution? Thanks for the advice, I usually just do concrete.

soak in caustic. spray with caustic. ds with caustic. they'll be fine either way. Just not more than 5 minutes of soaking.
