Human Resources Training Anyone?

I posted this on TGS earlier, but think it will get some different responses here.

I often hear about the troubles people have with employee turnover and retention, as well as with employee work ethic and loyalty.

I don't have any employees, but I have managed large crews of movers (~40 fulltime employees, and various part-timers and casuals). I can relate to these problems, and as an employee in the past, have felt that some of my coworkers were troublesome.

As a former union activist, I tend to believe that most people want to work, but the constant refrain from small-business owners can't be entirely accidental. Somewhere in the relationship between many business owners and their employees, there lurks a problem.

The question is, can we root it out without involving our egos and politics?

We have to figure this one out if we want our businesses to grow at reasonable rates, without spending a fortune constantly going over ground we've trodden before. Employee turnover is expensive, and good employees are worth finding and keeping.

I received a mailing from an outfit called the Institute for Applied Management & Law, Inc. (IAML - Institute for Applied Management & Law, Inc. - Employment Law & Human Resources) yesterday. They offer seminars in various human resources and federal compliance areas. I don't have a good handle on how to evaluate the usefulness of these certificate classes, but they are an approved provider (?) for the Human Resources certification Institute.

The HRCI (HRCI - PHR-SPHR-GPHR Certification) has a multi-tiered certification series in human resources priciples and the application of those priciples.

Does anybody here have any experience with either of these groups (or any others) that they would like to share?

Anybody have an opinion on this?

Again, I'm not asking for a test of ideologies, let's try to approach this as fellow business owners trying to identify the problems, and the solutions of those problems, in finding and retaining quality employees.
