I'm looking to buy a filtration system

I need to buy a filtration system. I currently have a vacuboom vb40 202cfm vacuum with auto pump out. I was looking into buying the hydrotek azv88 vacuum/filtration system but would rather save money and buy what I need.

Does anyone sell or have a guide on how to build my own filtration system. I'm not looking for one that will separate the oil, I will use oil socks for that.

If I could build or buy a filtration system like the one on the hydrotek azv88 http://www.hydrotek.us/rec-azv88.htm life would be good.

Does your vacuum pump out build water pressure sufficient to pump through a filtration system? If so, you could easily but two filters in line with the tank to pump out to. Put a 50 and a 20 micron filter in there, and you could make it closed loop.

Give me a call sometime and i'll tell you how I built mine.

I think your best bet would be to let the pumped water from the vacuum boom system go to a tank (does not have to be big) and then use a better quality pump to push the effluent through bag filters/strainers, and you should be good to go.

I have been looking for reasonably priced bag filter/strainer housings with reasonably sized bags. Anyone found any?

Danny could you make a video running us through it?

I have a couple of tanks I could use. I've been searching for the filters and haven't had any luck either.

I found these.... I guess they are priced OK. Once I found them, I really didn't keep looking for any other prices.

The problem I have found with bag filters is that they will typically have a plastic cage that will get soft and collapse under the weight of Hot water. A vacuboom might give it sufficient time to cool the water so that there is not a problem but if you have a vac surface cleaner it will happen.

That's what I would like to do.

This is my pump do you think it has enough power?

I wonder what is used in the sirocco or hot and mighty systems

Good idea!!

Thanks you saw that some where before and forgot, wish they had them in Stainless steal

I agree, SS mesh would be best, maybe industrial supply places.

I don't beleive that would work. I recommend a pool and spa pump around 1/2 hp. For best results if you will use a 20 micron oil absorbent bag filter and a 5 micron polishing filter your cost will stay in a reasonable range and it will perform as you need. Just pump your waste water from the vacuum to a holding tank and use the pool and spa pump to pump the waste water through the filter housings. Example may be found in the RAHSCO Wats Blaster on page 25.

Delving into the graveyard of research and development, (the shed in my backyard) I found this setup. This is a DE filter setup. (CHEAP maintenance - 5 microns!)

First I had a pool strainer for the big stuff.

Then it went through the DE filter.

I had it recirculating over and over again. It would clean 90 gallons to clear (with a little yellow tinge) in less than 5 minutes.

Is there any reason you guys always use the changeable cartridge filters instead of DE?

We've had DE in our pool for 7 years now and I've only pulled the filters out to clean them once. You just backflush (or vibrate the handle to flush on the one in the picture below) and put in more DE every now and then.

I checked when we got it and I used this setup longer than I thought (for about a year) and never cleaned the filter. It was early on and we probably ran 3000 or so filters through it. The pressure gauge tells you when you need to jiggle the handle and flush it.

Why keep buying cartridges?

Although I have thought about it, the DE filter would plug to quickly in a pressure washing application. The only way I could see it working would be if there was a cartridge filter upstream to capture the major sediment, and to reduce the volume of sediment going to the actual DE filter. Remember that picture I showed in Ft. Worth, where cleaning a 150k garage I got four 30 gallon drums of sediment? That was three months after the previous cleaning. Imagine how quickly the DE filter would plug. Now, if you were to have some type of sediment tank, to take out the heavy stuff, then a filtration system down to 50 microns that was reliable, it might be just the ticket.

I went with cartridge filters first and they clogged up very fast and I was buying 2 a week. That's why I switched to DE.

The course filter captured the big stuff and only had to be cleaned once week or so.

What is involved in a sediment tank? Isn't that just a barrel with a baffle in it? I could see the use for that.

What would happen if you used a floating oil sponge and let it float on the top of the tank for oil removal?

Thats a lot of sludge Scott.

I have been looking at filtration systems understanding some and would like to be convinced of a reasonably priced setup or combination of setups that could do a 1/2 dozen typical dirty drive thrus a night and or small parking garage with out stopping every 20 mins to clear/check the filtration setup!

I would like to here some ideas as to what is the mechanical filtration process/scenario for the cleaning I have described above. Lets say based on a required outlet flow rate of 20-25gpm

Chris, call Larry or someone over at Rahsco Cleaning Systems and tell them to put you on their mailing list, they send out that Watts Blaster every so often. It has their info, sales, prices, products and more.
