Is anyone reclaiming chemical from downspouts?

I have some ideas for same day reuse. Clean down spouts, reservior at the downspouts, pour back into tank. No chem at downspouts, less damage, save money. I'll be trying some things. Anyone doing this?

We bag the downspouts. The problem with trying to reuse is once in a bag or other receptacle, the sun degrades it rapidly. On top of that while running off of the roof and down the spouts, it picks up contaminates which could ruin pumps depending on what you're using.

You would be suprised at how little is actually reclaimed. I thought we would go through a box of trash bags per job, but we usually only get like a cup or 2 from each spout. Sometimes not even that much...

:D Great minds

If your claiming a lot at the downspouts then you are probably spraying too much.

what about gutter guards attached to the gutters blocking over spray? Like painters use?

You would double your cleaning time having to move the gutter gaurds, and then you probably still wouldnt get all of the overspray and would need to water anyways....

A thorough watering before during and after does the trick fine, and doesn't take much time.

If you're reclaiming that much after applying chemicals I would say you are using too much. I bag the down spouts and never get over a qt. or two runoff. I remove bags before rinsing. Reclaiming during rinsing would be wasting time chemicals would be too weak for reuse.

If you do rinse (we dont) take the bags off first. If you fill up a bag w/ just chemical run off, you are using waaay to much chemical.

Hey Jeff, Good info. Do you have your TV commercial in a WMP format that you could email me? I like seeing other people stuff, but my company blocks media sites like youtube, so i am not able to veiw videos from here...Ill send you mine too if you're interested!

Yea, unless the roof is really steep and requires multiple applications you shouldn't be spraying enough product to fill a trash bag. Make sure you're using enough surfactant.

Jeff
On most TILE Roofs this is almost unavoidable unless the Roof Tiles are 90+ deg. The bagged runoff in most all cases is garbage and UN-reusable anyway.

good answers, more questions

The sun may decrease the strength, I guess it depends on % of your mix, I would filter the reclaimed. I sometimes get significant runnoff, depends on the gutter system. Bagging gutters is great but what do YOU do with it. Some guys down here, leave it for the customer claiming 100% runoff capture. Others take it with them. Hear no evil see no evil! South FL ALGEA is on Steroids these days. Contractors have forgot to install adequate gutters and sometimes run onto neighboring properties when zero lot lines are present. I'm not new to the game, just creating useful conversation for thought. Guttter guards would be timely if they were difficult, but what if they were easy and fast? hmmmm. What if they could work like gutters when gutters were not present and an extra gutter when they were, with a guard? Hey we all know everybody would make more money if we could send one guy out. Or do it yourself, alone. MAny people on this board act like business is booming and for some it may be, but the economy has hurt us in many ways. An extra guy on the ground running another machine and using gallons of water when we should be conserving, doesn't seem like the best decision. I have set up sprinklers, misters, used the homeowners garden hose and have tried many strategies to save that 500 dollars a week I pay for someone to water plants. Sometimes more. I'm not trying to devalue his work just think a worker could be more profitable if they were doing something to eliminate landscape damage.

I personally don't have a need to block any product from getting over the gutter edge, could be because I spray from the ladder at the roof edge most of the time,...or it could just be a more controlled delivery system. If you control your application you should be able to achieve very little kicking off the roof. The only place where this is of any real concern is at the is shooting the vertical part of the roof where there isn't anything to prevent at least some from going out over the edge. But, with a controlled method still isn't a real issue.

Are we talking about blocking them?
