IVC 6-Chuck Liddell vs. Jose "Pele" Landi-Jons

I found an interesting clip of Chuck's second career fight in Brazil.

The International Vale Tudo Championships. A brutal thirty minute war unlike anything I have ever seen from the USA UFC star.

No rounds, no breaks, no gloves. Very few rules. Head butts, groin strikes, kicking or knees to the head of a downed opponent, strikes to the back of the head, are all allowed.

This fight was in August 1998. He was 28 years old and weighed 198 pounds.

Liddell began his foray into the world of professional Mixed Martial Arts by winning a decision victory at his debut fight against boxer Noe Hernandez in UFC 17. But it wasn’t until he ventured to Brazil to fight in the International Vale Tudo Championship that not only his potential as a fighter began to skyrocket, but his career as well. Vale Tudo is mixed martial arts in its purest, most unrefined form. But loosely translated Vale Tudo means one thing…no rules. Unlike in the USA, at that time in Brazil there was no set regulation of specified rules on the sport by any athletic commission. The result was a brutal “baptism by fire” of head butts, elbows and a glaring obvious lack of protective gloves with only taped hands. Many MMA legends began their careers fighting in these raw, bare-fisted battles of will including Rickson Gracie, Mark Kerr, and Wanderlei Silva. His opponent that night was Jose Landi-Jons. To the fighting world he simply went by the name “Pele.” A member of the legendary Chute Boxe fight team, Landi-Jons was one of the world’s deadliest strikers and win against him was hard to come by for any fighter, especially a fighter with only 1 fight under his belt. But for “The Iceman” Chuck Liddell it was just another obstacle in his way.

“Going into that fight I had heard a lot of horror stories about Vale Tudo,” Liddell said. “But after the fight got going I was fine. I won the decision in the guy’s backyard; I mean I think like 80% of the people there were wearing Chute Boxe t-shirts. As far as the lack of gloves goes it wasn’t really a problem…I’ve been fighting without gloves my whole life (laughing.) But everyone there was good to me and they were still polite to me afterwards so there really wasn’t any bad blood.”
