20hp briggs ohv died a couple of weeks ago......started surging and lost power.

I have since replaced plugs, fuel pump, fuel filters, air filter, fuel cut off solenoid and cleaned the carb. Still have a no start. The shear key is also intact.
Could the valve lash be so out of spec it won't let the motor start?

Take both plugs out, and put your finger over the holes and turn the engine over. You should get a good healthy fart when it blows your finger off the hole. Make sure the plug wires are out of the way or you'll get zapped.

The zap is always fun...that how I found crack plug bootsthe last time.....the dribble of urine it produces is never fun

Remove the valve covers and see if the rocker arms are moving. We had a 20 hp Honda in this morning with the same problem. They were not moving. We sent it to the lawnmower shop to see why as we do not go inside the engines. The guy said he heard a loud pop just after starting it. I know, he did not like the news either.
