NETWORKING IS KEY!!! ~success story~

I recently joined the Home Builders Association of Louisville . . .I joined because looking through the directory there are 2400 members .. . 1 roof cleaning company, 6 power/pressure washing companies, and 20 some odd lawn and landscape companies . . .. I thought to my self. . . Am i better then them and can i out sell them? HELL YES I CAN!!!!

The best part came at the Christmas party this past friday when i asked a 23 year member of the association how many members in my line of work are actually active and do stuff in the org. his answer . . . ."I couldn't tell you a single one - lawn landscape power wash or roof cleaning" This member just so happens to be the CEO of the main Corp sponsor of the org! he was a great guy and is the president of the Associate members committee.

The next day I wanted to send him an e mail thanking him for being so nice and welcoming me into the club

this was my e-mail TO Joe

Joe,

Just wanted to say it was great meeting you Friday night. You and your wife are very kind and warm hearted people. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your generosity of being open and welcoming me into the association. I can’t think of a better way to come into an association of that size! I can tell that we share that “go get it spirit!” I look forward to talking to you more and hearing stories of your success!

PS I found this article online while looking for your e mail address and I really enjoyed reading it!

DJ. Wow, how professional. You said that is what you are and it sure seems that. Thank you for being so friendly. I will try to promote you as best I can, and I will get you on the mailing list for our Associates Advisory Committee. I think you would really enjoy the work we do on that committee. Thanks for sending the article. It has been awhile since I read it and it does bring a smile to my face.

I hope that the holidays are very enjoyable for you.

GUYS GET OUT THERE AND NETWORK IT WORKS . . . THIS IS PROOF!!!! I NOW HAVE THE LARGEST APPLIANCE DEALER IN LOUISVILLE REFERRING MY COMPANY. . MOST IMPORTANTLY ITS EXCLUSIVELY BECAUSE IM THE ONLY COMPANY HE KNOWS :D

Absolutely, great advertising. Period. I Myself have developed relationships with the president of the local chamber of commerce and the owner of a HUGE window and siding company (awesome contact, tons of work from people that think their siding needs replacement, just needs cleaning) some of my most valued business has come from networking. People always check their "mental database" when they need service of some kind. If they remember you and liked you youre in.

you never know who you are talking to either....when I was growing up I washed dishes at a private beach club in my town....this older man always came up and brought up his own dirty dishes and asked how I was doing (school etc)...one day my manager came up and asked if I knew who he was and I didnt...turned out to be a man named mr von Gontard....the guy owns 51% of Anheiser Busch brewing company....

How does the chambers of commerce work do you get alot of work from them.

Chris thats the wrong mentality to have . . . go into a club and say i want to increase membership for you guys or i wanna help market OUR club. You get out what you put into it! Successful people want to do business with successful people! Show them you didn't just join to get their business! You joined to be a member of the club/org/ass. the club is what is important .. . .thats the problem I see with the UAMCC . . Bless the TT hearts but every one already has their hands out asking whats in it for me and blowing up about the 300 to 400 dollar dues . . . When i looked at the HBAL and how great of a org it was i knew i NEEDED to be a part of it . . i didn't blink an eye at the $330 to join $25 to be on the council, $20 per meeting, $10 for council meetings or the $95 a year for the marketing comity . . . If i pull two jobs it will be more than worth it!!! Go into a club/org./ass. with an open mind and a want-to will-do attitude and the jobs will take care of them selves. . .

another example : today was the chamber meeting here locally . . . they were ellecting new commitee members I wanted to be on the new member drive and PR commitee and actually got appointed VP of the committe . . .after the meeting the pres and sec. of the CoC came up and said hey Dj Mark Smith from State Farm said you are doing web design yada yada said i did a good job and they are about to get the bill for this year and they would be open to changing companies . . .

See I just wanted to help increase membership and that turned into a 1k PLUS/year job possibility . . .

It pays to do the right thing and not ALWAYS be concerned about what something or some one can do for you directly!

I like to go to the business after hours meetings from the chamber......djs right its nice to get to know people...but it really will help your business in the long run...

Of course Dj great thread, you have learned how important networking with anyone truly is. Yes many of you have found that you never know who or whom you’re talking with.

This reminds me of a few tips,

1. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
2. You don’t have to like or be friends with someone to do business.
3. The strongest networks are those you build yourself.
4. Clubs, groups, orgs and Charity’s all do not share similar or like tactics of networking.
5. Be yourself, real business people can see a phony a mile away.
6. Be different and don’t always be politically correct. ( have Balls)
7. Other networkers are looking for strong relationships and confident people.

I want to not get off subject but #4 is something to look at and consider when joining or attending these groups. We may join a charity group to help the community but we really want to nail some work out of the deal. (Wrong) this is truly what we all want but you better know that it may never happen on the first one or even the second. People in these groups are not stupid, some are there for the same reason and some are there actually to help the community. There are others that want to see consistency from your membership.

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard people join and org or a groups and then bitch and moan about how 1000’s of dollars in work didn’t flow into their pockets.

You only make what you earn out of anything, Good post Dj, networking is one of the many things that make a successful person and life.

DJ, You go man! Keep on going dude. For being such a young man, you are impressing the hell out of me for being so a go gitter. Just don't bite off more than you can chew and swallow.

I was in BNI for a while, which is a network group that is in many cities around the world.

It was great, I definitely got a lot out of it. It helps strengthen your network skills for outside the group as well.

I'm to busy to network

good job go get it

Good work DJ. Networking is free. Utilizing others info cost. We are members of Two Chambers, one BNI, Toastmasters and PDCA. Along with other local groups. Total membership cost is over $1500 per yr. The return of having good contractors and businesses to pass on to our customers is worth more then any jobs we will get from members. They are basically just a vehicle for our business. Keep up the great work.
