Oxygen Bleach

I have been looking into using oxygen bleach.

I know it works. My wife spilled some on our deck. It looked awful on the wood for a couple of days and then it rained. It looked as good as any other cleaner and brightener.

The concern I have is the cost. The price seem to be close every place I found it on the web for 35 to 40 lbs. Is this the same as Oxyclean? Oxyclean is about $2.50 a lb in 3.5lb tubs. Buying it in 30 lbs. tubs it is about $5 a lb.

Has anyone used Oxyclean and how much does it take per gal of water? The other ones take 2lbs per gal. I know if it takes twice as much it will end up costing the same per deck.

Also, do you need to use a neutralizer after cleaning a deck with this.

dont waste

your money on store bought chems/detergents.
Oxi-clean is more then 40% fillers[soda ash]
and cost's way too much.
There are better deals then this but to get you started try this.
www.thechemistrystore.com sodium precarbonate
$1.35 per lb. plus shipping.
You can also get your citric acid and oxalic acid their.
To get the oxalic acid you need to fill out some paperwork and fax/mail it to the co.[it is a poision].
You will also find formulations for diffrent cleaners and other chem uses.
Dont get carriedaway and BE SAFE.
YOU NEED A LOT OF EDUCATION TO MESS WITH RAW CHEM.
BE SAFE BE SAFE BE SAFE.

You can purchase a small concrete mixer - works great to mix your powder chemicals.

A while back you mentioned that you use limonlene in your housewash mix, 1 gallon for every 4 gallons of wash...I'm assuming you're referring to D-Limonene, and if so, where do you get it? The chemistrystore has it at 26.50/gallon...do you put a whole gallon of this in, or do you dilute it first? At that price, I can see what people mean when they talk about chems being expensive!

Thanks!

your correct mike

take a orange peel and put it abount an inc from your eye and bend the orange peel in half so the bend faces your eye.
You will see the limonlene, but more important you'll FEEL the limonlene.:D

Ron,
When using sodium precarbonate from the chemical store, do you add anything to it before mixing it with water and how much do you use per gallon of water? Do you use it on houses and mix it with limonlene only?

lenny

i dont use the pre carb for house washing. It dont get enuff dwell time for it to do the job.
I use either pool chlorine 12%sh or sented bleach at 6%sh
most times the bleach is what i use.
As a wood cleaner i use the the stuff they tell you about in the recipe. I also use a mix of oxalic acid and citric acid to brighten/nuet.
Sometimes for wood ill just use sodium pre-carb bleach, some TSP from home depot and a squirt of Dawn. The dawn gives it some stick, for the rails ,fence, and railroad ties.
Amounts of chems depends on how bad the surface is and how you apply it.
i use a tank and pump hooked to a hand cart.
I use 4 cups of pre-carb/1 cup of TSP AND A SQUIRT OF DAWN.
As a starting point.
It will overflow with suds when you go to stir it. Thats OK.
The mix is only good for 20 min. You must mix at the job. Warm water works best.

oneness

Yep that's my 5 gal mix
EFC38 from russ or beth at see dirt run is mostly the same thing if you dont want to mess with buying all the diffrent chems.
TSP Should be avail. in any PAINT store.
TSP Will chem sand paint[slightly etch] so be carefull where you spray it.

Exactly, and so is TimberClean that Greg sells. ( www.deckguide.com ) Both will do a good job, at a reasonable price.

BLEACH ??????

Lenny,
Some info on bleach
WHY EASY TO USE BLEACH PRODUCTS DO NOT WORK
Chlorine bleach prod. contain sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite
these chemicals are effective against mildew but do little to remove dirt orother surface deposits. After all if bleach were effective in removing dirt you wouldnt have to add detergent to it when washing clothes.

When you spray chlorine bleach(sodium hypochlorite) onto the wood surface all you are doing is removing the mildew stains..

Dont shoot the messenger..

When you use bleach/SH, yes you kill mold but you are also breaking down the LANGLIN. Langlin is the glucolse that holds the wood fibers together. Even after a very good rinse some of the SH can remain and do further damage to the wood.[you'll get more fuzzies and take some color out of the wood, also it can effect the sealer] With the sodium pre-carb bleach the active chem will exsaust itself in 2 hrs and turn into salt and soda ash.[reg bleach will also do this but takes longer and dose more damage]
If you have a deck that only SH will get clean[it happens] you should add a step to your cleaning. Use 2 lbs of bakeing powder to 5 gal of water and apply with a pump-up. Do this after the bleach has done it's job. Then double rinse. Then use the brightner.
Some will say this is a wasted step,i dont agree.

Great Info

Hi Ron,
That is some great info, I agree with you I dont see it
as being a wasted step, I will do that..

I agree, using chlorine bleach on wood can cause damage. never use it on wood, that is why I was wondering what others thought about oxygen bleach. After reading the post I might try it on wood but the dwell time for siding wood be to long.
