Painted Brick

I know a person that has brick about 4 feet up the front of there house. It is common anywhere, brick and then the siding starts. anyway, it is painted and she wants it back to the original brick. is it possible to restore this? Since it is so porous i would think not. has anybody tried this. Let me know

It is possible that it could be taken back to mostly bare brick - however, it's going to cost a substantial amount of money. Strippers for this type of removal are fairly expensive and it's a labor intensive job. I once had a painter tell me that getting paint off of bricks was the worst thing in the world and you'd create new cusswords throughout the entire process :) You are correct in the porosity of the brick being an issue.....the paint is deep in the crevices of the bricks and the morter. You still have to be careful of the pressure or you'll be repointing all over the place where morter gets blown out.

Let us know if you try to pull this one off - we've avoided this type of work like the plague....it's not like grafitti removal. That paint got put there on purpose and for a reason and probably a pretty long time ago.

Jasco makes a stripper for several different surfaces, although it's a Lowe's product - you could at least give her the courtesy of a test spot? I've also heard that Strip-Eze is a pretty tough product as well.

i had recently had a guy want to strip a 15000 sq ft strip center. the owner did the painting a cheap as possible. latex on the outside. water has gotten inside and created mold. he was talking about sand blasting. i told him the clean up alone in costly. then i found a company that uses dried ice. clean up is non exestant. it goes from solid form to gas right away. the cost is about $3.30 a sq ft.
