polished end dump trailers

One of my clients has a polished end dump trailer that I wash about once a month for him (it really needs it weekly but thats what he wants). Recently he requested if I could put some extra time in it to get it shining good again. I started by soaping, brushing and rinsing. Next I put my soap on and then followed with my acid on top of my soap and then rinsed. Then I finished by rinsing small areas and then putting acid on and rinsing again, I did this pretty quickly as not to let the acid be on too long. A few parts of it like the back end and top rails are not polished so i used straight acid and they came out good. The polished part came out clean, better then I thought it would - its the best I've ever seen it look. The problem is, there is a film still on the polish. You have to get right up to it and rub it to notice the film. What would take this film off?

what type of acid are you useing? PH.HF,HC,COMBO OF MORE THEN 1. What kind of soap caustic or alk.?
The film my be oxidation forming on the bare alum. It will turn white. Did you add a wax to your rinse water? you should, once you acid polished alum it opens the pores, now dirt will stick like crazy, thats if you used HF acid.
you should have used PH acid.

I knew someone would ask that, I'm at my other job so when I get home I will check to see what they are. thanks

What ever you do,do not use HF acid on polished unless you have total control as in getting it on and off as in flashing, its not wise to NOT even get HF acid close to polished.

The film can be brushed off with a weak soap mix,the film does not usually show up until after it dries, right.I do not know what causes it to film at times and not at times........looks bright and shiney while wet but dries with a sorta white dirty film, only way I know of getting it off is to brush it or flash with HF acid which is a NO NO.

IT will help if you'll apply your acid first then your soap, whats how acid works best and the way it is meant to be used.Rinse the dirt off if every dirty if just light dirty apply your acid, apply your soap and rinse off......then if it looks like its going to dry with the dirty film sometimes you can re'apply your acid and rinse off,its has a 50/50 chance getting it off.IF it films every time you wash it which some do some don't,it'll be cheaper and faster to just brush it to start with, these type I give to my competitor,no kidding I do not like brushing,I've have nothing againest brushing tho,I'm lazy what can I say.

First off I'd warn him if he doesn't keep the polished cleaned nomore then once a month,it will be a bitch to you to try to keep it looking like polished especi'lly end dump.If he is asking you to spend alittle more time to make it shinning good again I would have told him to help me keep it that way by aleast getting it washed every two weeks or it will always need a little extra time but it will never look shinny new again unless he wants to polish it back out which will cost him a arm and a leg atleast a half leg, which why he needs to wash it atleast every two weeks if not more ifen running in bad weather. When the polished gets bad enough to not clean up most end dumps usually go to the HF acid wash which will cut the polish off leaving a bright shinny alum end dump, which is alot easier to wash,ha..always apply your acid first.

It could be Alkali or calcium in the water. It is the stuff that causes water hardness. The reason that flashing with acid works is because the alkali is a base, and the acid neutralizes it.

Another way, though it can be a bit pricey and not worth it unless you are doing quite a few trucks would be to get DI water, or softened water. That removes teh hardness as well, and reduces the scalloping that is caused by the water that you are seeing.

He hasn't complained or said anything about the trailer and he usually says something right away to me if he doesn't like something. I think my soap is caustic, because the MSDS sheet says its corrosive (because it contains sodium hydroxide) and I couldn't find my acid MSDS sheet but it is Zep-A-Lume from Zep if that helps. I don't use any wax in my rinse water. I also have a water softener on my trailer but I only use it when pulling in water from certain clients. I have city water and found that it works better if I don't run it thru the softener. I've looked at RO systems but they are pretty pricey. It's going on 3 weeks since I did that and will either wash it this weekend or next so I will try the weak soap and brushing to see what it does. He started off having me do it once a week but then went to once a month (I'm guessing to save money). The trailer wasn't in the best of shape when I started washing it, I was able to clean it pretty decent when doing it once a week but going to once a month I couldn't keep at as clean with my standard wash. What do I look for when determining if an acid is HF or PH? Thanks for your help.

PJ It should say on your MSDS for the acid. Please tell me you have that. HF=HYDROFLORIC ACID
PH=PHOUSPHERIC ACID if you did not turn the alum. white then its not HF HF=DANGER in not kidding
If you washed a lot of polished aluminum i would tell you to check out www.eacochem.com they have a safe alum. brightner called SABER. IT CAN EVEN DRY ON THE GLASS WITH NO PROBLEMS.
BIG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ FOR IT.
$580 PER 55 GAL PLUS SHIPPING
CUT IT 50/50 WITH WATER AND USE YOUR DOWNSTREAMER AT A 20% DRAW. Then leave your brush on the truck.
its called 2 stepping buts 3 steps.

I printed one (MSDS) off for the acid, since I couldn't find the one I had. In the ingredients it lists sulfuric acid 10-20%, hydrofluoric acid 5-10%, phosphoric acid <5% and ethylene glycol monobutyl ether <5%. So, would this be a combo then? This is the only end dump that I wash that is polished.
