Three times a year, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet sends crews with power washers to three “trouble spots” at Louisville underpasses where a buildup of bird poop is a potential public health hazard, spokeswoman Andrea Clifford said.

Birds congregate at the overpasses, and over time, a layer of droppings several inches thick amasses on road shoulders and sidewalks below. Road lanes have to be closed so the crews can clean it off.

The latest such closure will be Tuesday from 7 p.m. to midnight on Ky. 22 where the road passes under the Gene Snyder Freeway. The left lane in both directions will be closed during the cleanup.

The Transportation Cabinet has gotten numerous calls from residents complaining that the poop is so “thick, it’s building up and it’s a health hazard,” Clifford said.

Crews allot a five-hour window for the cleaning and “I’d say it probably takes most of that time,” Clifford said.

Other trouble spots in Louisville include the Watterson Expressway underpasses on Southern Parkway and Taylor Boulevard, she said.

The poop removal is part of the Transportation Cabinet’s normal maintenance routine and the cost for cleaning the three areas is $9,000 a year, Clifford said.
