Propane Injected Conversion on F-350

With the price of diesel rising to over $4.00 a gallon I'm looking to add the BullyDog of similar propane injected conversion kit to my truck.

Since I have a 2007 F-350 Flatbed with the 6.0L Diesel in it I figure it would worth the $1,000 to spend on it (installed).

It increases towing MPG (I'll find out by how much today) and give the truck 100 extra HP. The will burning ratio is 4 gallons diesel to 1 gallon propane. I have a 50 gallon tank already mounted to the bed of the truck and since I only pay $2 a gallon for propane I thought it might be worth in investing in the conversion kit.

Anyone ever have this conversion done to their trucks? Or do I get to be the 1st one on here to try it?

Thats like nitrous for diesels? I heard you get 100% combustion. I have also heard that wiper fluid injection - 55% meth and 45% water - is better than propane, not sure about cost though.

It's similar to nitrous for diesels Tom. You are also correct about getting 100% combustion versus only 75% combustion with diesel by itself. I have never heard of wiper fluid injection but I will definetely look into it.

The 6.0L puts out about 325 HP so with an extra 100 HP I would have more HP than the new 2011 trucks do.

The ingredient in that that is being used is methanol or alcohol. The purpose is to lower the temperature of the inlet charged air from the turbo, thus increasing the efficiency and reducing the propensity for detonation in higher boost applications for all the HP junkies out there. This is usually used in addition to the fuel that runs the vehicle. To run on straight methanol you need alot of money because last time I bought it for my old race car, it was alot more costly than diesel or propane for that matter.

I believe there are kits out there for the Izusu diesels Greg. I was quoted a additional $10,000 mark up to go completely propane powered on a 2010 F-250 with the 5.4L and a $17,000 mark up to go Natural Gas on the same truck. Keep in mind there is a $8,000 federal rebate though for you at the end of the year on your taxes if you go with a new work truck that is completely alternative fuel powered.

I got the impression the methanol helped the diesel burn like the propane and the water was good for something also. One of the grades of wiper fluid is just the right mix.

Snow injection for water methanol injection. We have a local propane supplier that does the diesel propane conversion. It used to be that the local Cat dealer ran all their diesels on natural gas over diesel.

Vince please dont belive that about 4 gallons of diesel to 1 gallon of propane.Propane is much lower in btu s than diesel.I dont think you would be happy if you did the conversion because you still have to pay road tax on the propane if its powering a motor vehicle and you will not have the same power as you do now.It does run cleaner but after the road tax and expense of converting it you would propably be about the same.

Vince, I have a friend with the Propane setup. The cost is still the same. You are just substituting one fuel for another. But the efficiency is increased, thus more power.

Consider going greasel diesel / vegi oil combination.

I run 50/50 diesel/vegi oil. I get the same power but at 60% the cost.

Do you mind sharing Michael how much your conversion kit was for veggie oil and where would I get the kit from? Thanks for any help you can give on the conversion.

If I was smart I would fix the machine on the truck and then put the trailer in storage and use it for a back up unit. The machine on the truck only needs new electrodes for the burner and a choke kit. I can move everything else I need off the trailer and onto the truck for now.

I like the idea of the propane kit with the diesel but not propane by itself.

Do you have to have a programmer if you add the propane kit?

I wonder how that added hp does to the drivetrain over time if you are not running a lead foot all the time?

I have been wanting to do the biodiesel for several years now but still cannot find a restaurant that does not have a contract with Griffin or the other companies out there that pickup or buy the used cooking oil.

I believe BullyDog makes a great kit for the propane injected conversion. I know it doesn't void any warranties you have on the truck. I think the kit is about $1,000 or so for it if I remember correctly. I heard good things and bad things about running biodiesel. I'm still not 100% sold on the biodiesel idea though.

As for the programmers I'm not sure how that works. I've decided to get the unit on my truck running and put my trailer in storage to save on fuel for now.

If I can only find a little Ford Ranger truck (stripped to the bones) brand new for $10,000 I'll be in good shape for doing errands and bids in.
