Redwood Restoration

I have bid on a three story redwood house to restore the redwood siding damaged by smoke and intense heat from a grass fire. In addition to the wood damaged by the fire, the ten year old house has had three applications of Sikkens applied to the wood without ever stripping the old stain. As you can imagine, the color of the wood was blotchy before the fire and what the fire did was to add black from smoke damage and raise some of the Sikkens' coating.

I have already conducted some tests and I am fairly confident I can remove the Sikkens one coating at a time so what I would like to know from those of you who might have experience with redwood, is what stain do you like best and why.

My experience with redwood has been in decks and not houses but possibly some of you in the west have experience with redwood houses.

I will attempt to add some pictures so that you can see what I'm dealing with. I have already submitted a bid and now we're waiting on the insurance company.

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas.

Jim, how did this go? Got any pics? Have you thought of cob blasting, it works great on Sikkens?

Rich, could you safely cob blast redwood siding? I want to try that just once!

Jim, we've successfully removed multiple layers of Sikkens with HD-80. Given the vertical application, we would use Hang Time with it to ensure the stripper would not run down too quickly. As far as the finish, we're quite partial to Wood Tux :)

A couple summers back, we heard a horror story about a redwood home in PA that was cob blasted partially, then the contractor quit (he chewed the wood up really badly) another was hired, and it was chemically stripped. We never saw the job, but the owner called us several times asking if we wanted to take over. The answer was no....
