I have a customer who is going through shingle warranty to get roof cleaned and they are saying I need to apply a mold prevention chemical if the company is go to pay for it. I have no problem with doing that I just need to know who sells this with at least a 3yr warranty. I looked some up and they say one year. Any suggestions welcome

If the manufacture is saying that, I would think they have a product they recommend....I if it's part of there warranty procedure they should have something they specify so in two years they can;t say....not our fault, YOUR product didn't work.

The company paying for the work and instituting conditions shall specify the product.

The applicator issues assurances that the product shall be applied according to the product written instructions.

Or just give them a three year come back guarantee. If the stains come back within three years, you wil too. No charge.

It would be interesting though to see the written comment from the shingle manufacturer that you must install a third party product to activate their warranty.

I believe that the whole truth is not yet revealed in this situation.

I have heard about the shingle manufacturer paying for roof cleaning but not mentioning about any protection against the fungus coming back.

I would like to see this in writing, the homeowner should be able to provide this to you if it is true.

Sounds like maybe a competitor has something that they are trying to sell besides the roof cleaning and the homeowner wants to match prices or products?

Nothing out there is going to prevent mold and algae from returning. Way too many contributing factors. However, I have noticed that on just about every SHINGLE roof that we clean, the appearance of returning mold seems to fall within the 4-5 year time period. ARMA recommends aplying a bleach and soap application to kill and remove the existing mold. IMO the only/ best prevention out there is a preventative maintenance program. Personally if this were my job I wouldn't waste a ton of time on it unless its for a big commercial job. Whoever is making these demands just seems to be trying to get out having to pay to have it cleaned.

Sounds to me like the roof was warrantied against mold and mildew, (because they are having it cleaned under warranty) the coating they used didn't work, so now they want you to find something that will......ODD. Who is this shingle manufacture????

LOL, Tamko, I know them very well. They are based in Joplin Missouri. Tamko is trying to get OUT from under their warranty by getting YOU to apply and warranty a roof cleaning, in effect, taking them off the hook.

It is NOT true there is nothing you can do to prevent algae regrowth. I have done hundreds of field tests on AppleSauce, and roofs cleaned with this mixture stay clean longer. The AppleSauce formula is posted here.
Borax is a proven mold preventer, it is used in mattresses, and wood is treated with it to prevent mold.

Back in the old days of roof cleaning, when we were cleaning large chunks of subdivisions, I would take one side of a street, and clean every other roof with the Borax mixture (AppleSauce) and then every other home with just a Chlorine/TSP/Water mixture (No Borax)
I made notes, and came back every year, to check on my experiments.
The AppleSauce treated roofs held out anywhere from 6 months to a year longer before showing signs of Algae regrowth.
Even after 4 to 5 years, when both the AppleSauce and Non AppleSaUCE roofs were both dirty, the Algae was thicker, and far more visible.
