Rust on ashpalt shingles

Hey guys, I did a couple searches and all I could find was how to remove rust on concrete. My question is, how do you remove rust stains from asphalt shingles?? I booked a roof cleaning today that has some staining around the chimney. I told the homeowner that I doubt I could get that off and he said he didn't care about it, that he just wanted the black off. I'd like to really impress him and get the rust out too. If it helps, I can DS as well as use the Fatboy. Walking it isn't an option.

Make sure when using any type of acid product on shingles that you pre wet the shingles, apply your product, and then rinse and chase with water. If not a small barely noticeable but is noticeable white haze will form on the shingles. I always pre warn my customers of the white haze possibility to cover myself.

Oxalic acid would likely do the trick. Careful not to mix it with bleach, use ppe, etc.

Oxalic would be my first choice too. 6 or 8 oz to a gallon should remove it. Don't DS it, use a clean chemical sprayer.

I have done many stains on asphalt. Safe restore works better than Ox but I have used Ox also. Sometimes Ox will leave a lighter color shingle.

If it's a rusty chimmney pan, the stains will come back pretty quickly.

That's exactly what it's from. He has fixed the problem but still has the stains on the roof. Doug pm'ed me and suggested OneRestore. Anyone else tried it?

Edit: After searching for safe restore, it looks like it and onerestore are the same thing, just with an updated name. Is this true?

Yes...eaco chem changed the name from safe restore to one restore last year. You can also call eaco chem and ask for MIke. He is very helpful.

I would suggest pre-testing ANY acid.....I had a local competitor ask me what I use to clean rust and he sprayed a roof with oxalic and lightened the shingle color. He never mentioned what the rust was on.

Daniel,

Rust stains from irrigation rust are easy to remove but stains from rusting metal are usually impervious and can be lightened but not removed. The effort to get a noticeable reduction in the rust stain will typically damage the shingles. It is prudent to give an attempt but let the customer know there is a line you can not cross or it will damage the shingles and make sure your payment is not contingent on getting the rust removed. As always have everything in writing and signed off on before starting the cleaning.

Hope this helps,

AC

Thanks! Keith did it and some new two sided business cards for me. I told the customer not to expect it to come out and he said that was fine. It is no where near as visible as the fungi. I just thought it would be nice if I could get it out. I'm sure he would be pleasantly surprised.
