Should a New PW Business Specialize?

Hello again everyone, I had another question to go along with my "New to the Business" post. As a new PW'er starting out in the Business, is it best to "Specialize" in 1 or 2 area's when getting started? I am a small part time operation with hopes of doing it full time if I can get my feet off the ground. I have been cleaning alot of Sidewalks, Driveways and Concrete in general. I also have done a few homes and fences, but mostly just concrete. It seems with all the parking lots and driveways out there a guy could stay busy cleaning concrete for a long time. Should I concentrate on it or expand to every kind of Pressure Washing as a new PWing business. Thanks for any advice!

Mike,

Don't limit yourself too much at this point. Try your hand at a few different things, and see what you like...........and what your market will bear.

After the first year, sit down and take a hard look at your profitability on each service, and consider what you enjoy doing. Then focus your marketing efforts on less services in your second year.

Personally, I have to diversify since I live in Pennsylvania and we enjoy four distinctly different seasons each year. I wash houses, do wood restoration (mostly decks), gutter cleaning, Install gutter guards, and snow plowing in the winter.

If I lived in a more stable climate, I would be more inclined to specialize. Another option to consider would be to start a seperate company to specialize, lets say in wood restoration. Investigate very carefully before doing so, since that scenario could generate a lot of extra expenses and possibly taxes.

If you are interested in trying various aspects of the power washing industry, perhaps you could ride a long with some of us here and experience different things.

If you're not afraid of heights, I'm going to be installing a lot of gutter guards in the next couple of weeks.....

I have to agree with Mike, don't limit yourself to any one thing. The only thing that should limit what you do is your equipment. If you have a hot water rig then there really isn't anything that you can't do. If you only have a cold water system, I would stick to decks and house washing. For flat work like concrete, nothing works better than hot water and good chemicals when needed.

Gutter cleaning season has arrived...
After one day of miserable rains we had 30mph gusty winds today and 80% of the leaves have fallen off the trees.

If your not afraid of heights hop on the roof and get busy guys, the money train has finally arrived.

Our call volume jumped from 40 calls a day to over 100 within 24 hours.

Using past history as an example, We will be working 7 days a week for the next few months.

Man I love gutter season!!
